Williams-went to Oregon
Schankel went to Cal Poly SLO
Lompoc's 1972 Cross Country team is the best XC team in US history.
Lompoc had Terry Williams, Jim Shankel, Alvin Gilmore, and others.
mead '93-94 was also very, very good.
Matt Davis(14:00 3mile XC, 9:03), Micah Davis(8:58, 4:08), Greg James(4:10), Rob Aubrey(9:03), Sky Detray(4:08, 8:58)
they still hold the all-time best team time at California's Woodward Park, where they used to run the Footlocker races.
Jesuit (Sacramento)
800 -- 1:49.29 (12 - 1:55 or faster)
1600 -- 4:04.00 (4 sub-4:05; 7 - 4:10 or faster)
3200 -- 8:44.95 (9 sub- 9:04)
3000 -- 8:07
5000 -- 14:01
DMR -- 9:56
I hear that Jesuit squad was pretty good!!! Ha Ha!
I was a junior when the Mastalirs were seniors. My brother, Jim, was the same class as Mark and Eric.
When we set the Mt. SAC team record, our 5th man ran 17:10.
He later went on to run 9:18 for 3200m the next spring.
Yeah, go Axemen

Not trying to one up anyone here, but my alma amter (Jesuit Sacto) also has a respctable all time list that you can find here:
http://jesuittrack.org/top25.htm800m 12 under 1:56
1600m 6 under 4:09 average of top 10 times= 4:09.13
3200m 10 under 9:10 (86 top 3 8:43, 8:46, 9:00)
I would also love to see YORK, MEAD, LOMPOC, WOODLANDS etc...there have been some great programs over the years!
Hey Paul!
With all that quality at S. Eugene, I don't think the mile relay is particularly impressive. Heck, my alma mater ran 3:17, and I coached a school to 3:20.56 whose school records are 49.06, 1:55.05, 4:22.20, and 9:23.17, not remotely in SE's league. Not trying to "hate" SE, but I just find that one surprising.
The big question to this thread is(with the exception of just a very few-McChesneys/Sage/Stember), what did any of those ppl do in college or beyond. Its very sad to me when ppl peak in high school,.
hey at least they had a peak, some people never get the chance to run fast ever. Some people just dont improve for different reasons, but at least they can say they were on top at some point in their lives, 99 % of all runners will never get that feeling. So If i had to choice of having a mediocre college career or an outstanding hs career where I was the best, i would drop college in a heart beat and live it up for a year or two in hs
I've heard so much about this team; my coach was on it.
Didn't Harry Johnson start out as a gymnastics coach?
Does anyone have any information on how these teams trained? How many people they had out? And how these people did in college?
South Eugene won the Oregon state XC Championship in '68, '70, '72, '73, '74, '75, '76, '77, '78' 79, and '81, and placed 2nd in '80, '90, '91, '94, '95, and '04.

No one has mentioned Steve Stageberg. Has anyone else from South Eugene finished higher than Stageberg in the NCAA cross country championships? He finished second overall in 1968.

Scott, is that you???
Oh, and it's "Sageberg" by the way, no "t." I'm a stickler when it comes to that sort of thing.
You're dead wrong. It's "Stageberg," not "Sageberg." Just Google them.
My bad.
