i like more how all 4 nominees for best track and field athlete are 4 sprinters.
they have a "Hummer like nothing else award"???
now that's funny, yea I won the Hummer ESPY....uhhhh
How much better would Alysia Johnson or Michelle Sikes have to be to even be nominated for best college athlete? Sometimes I hate this country...
I voted for the bass fisher. They all sounded like attention whores to me.
idk that one girl was like 3 years old and had climbed every single mountain in the world...I definitely voted for her.

I didn't believe you so I clicked the link and voted, sure enough there was Dean nominated for an award. This is officially the most f***ed up award show ever when this get even gets a NOMINATION for anything.
... Also what's up with all of the LeBron love, he's in every category except Women's Best Golfer. Man did they forget that this clown did NOTHING against the best team in the NBA? It's easy to look like a star in the Eastern Conference, ugh. Why are there so many WNBA players and categories? There's about 10 other women in Track and Field and Swimming who are better athletes than anyone in the WNBA or LPGA.
That whole thing is a load of garbage. Some of them aren't even debatable. Best Play? Duh, Boise State's Statue of Liberty. Best Coach? Greg Poppovich. Best Upset? Golden State over Dallas. There is no argument against any of these. ESPYs suck ass, I'm glad I've never watched it and I'm not going to start.

I voted for him. C'mon 50 marathons in 50 days IS PRETTY AMAZING. Only a handful of people in the world could accomplish that. He did a 200 mile run by himself as well. I like him, don't understand why everyone else doesn't.
I also just voted for Dean.
voted for the mountain climbing girl. I figure since I can woop Karnezas's ass in a marathon any day of the week and I'm not nominated he shouldn't be either.
I voted for Dean in the Most Insane and Ill-Conceived Athletic Publicity Stunt category for his 24-hour treadmill run while hanging from a balcony above Times Square.
Does anyone care about the ESPYs?

Yeah, but can you whoop his ass every day of the week, since that's his gimmick?
That's a tough call between Dean and that bass angler.
j/k
It’s not that Dean’s a pariah, he simply just doesn’t deserve the award. Initially, just for clarification, this is why so many people hate him. It's not that he can't run. It's why he runs. He's a businessman, first and foremost, before he’s a runner. For Karnazes, running is simply a moneymaking tool, a product. Dean’s a running capitalist. And, since the ultimate end of capitalism is totalitarianism, which is bedmate to fascism, Dean is, modus ponendo ponens, a fascist, and everybody hates a fascist.
Really, there’s nothing humbling about what he does when he goes out of his way to exploit it. And I meant it when I said he doesn’t deserve the award. Many men and women put in as much weekly mileage as Karnazes. Many men have kicked his ass in races. For instance, Scott Jurek.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scott_Jurek
• Won the Spartathlon 152-mile race from Athens to Sparta, Greece (September 29-30, 2006).
• Won the Western States Endurance Run seven consecutive times (1999-2005).
• Won the Badwater Ultramarathon twice (2005, 2006).
• Finished first three times (2002-2004) and second three times (2001, 2005, 2006) in the Miwok 100K.
• Won the Leona Divide 50 Mile Run four times (2000, 2001, 2002, 2004).
• Won the Diez Vista 50K Trail Run twice (2000, 2003).
• Won the Montrail Ultra Cup series twice (2002, 2003).
Now, compare Scotts profile to Deans
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dean_Karnazes
Significant race wins:
2004 Badwater Ultramarathon[6]
2006 Vermont 100 Mile Endurance Run[7]
Running feats:
128.75 miles in 24 hours on treadmill in NY (2007)
350 miles in 80 hours and 44 minutes without stopping (2005)[8]
North Face Endurance 50: fifty marathons in fifty U.S. states in fifty consecutive days
inaugural South Pole Marathon in running shoes
148 miles in 24 hours on a treadmill (2004)[9]
single-handedly completed the 199 mile Providian Saturn Relay six times
1000-Mile/10 Day Buckleholder at the Western States Endurance Run[10] (i.e., better than ten twenty-four hour finishes. Note: Karnazes current count is 11 finishes in less than twenty-four hours each)
To my knowledge, Scott Jurek has never been up for an espy.
Also, a marathon a day figures out to 180 miles a week. 180 miles a week for under two months is not unheard of. Many elite level marathoners train 120-170 miles a week for months on end, with speed-work included. True, Karnazes’ 350 miles is pretty impressive. However, that averages out to 13:50 a mile. You could seriously walk a mile at that pace. Not to mention it wasn’t unaided, as his dad drove beside him in a support van, providing food and water. Also, lets see how his “running feats” stack up against the world, let alone other Americans. Hmm… there’s all these people
http://www.srichinmoyraces.org/3100/past_editions/2004/bios
Specifically, this guy Madhupran Wolfgang Schwerk, who has run 3100 miles in 42 days+13:24:03 (WR), as well as establishing 74 new distance records, from 1400 miles right up to 5000 km. His performance was so dominating, averaging 72.8 miles (117.13 km) per day, that he led the world that year with the fastest 1000 mile time-a split! (13 days, 5 hours).
And this guy, Arpan DeAngelo, an American who ran a 1000 miles in 14 days, 23 hours. That averages out to about 66 miles a day. For Karnazes to reach a 1000 miles with his “50 marathons in 50 days”, it took 38 days.
So, that’s the best I’ve got. Dean Karnazes is decent on the ultra-running scene, but honestly, he does a lot less with a lot more than a lot of other people. If you, for some twisted reason, want to give him credit for his self promotion, then let’s see him up for an award for that.
wow, good facts. appreciate the time it took for you to gather all that info. i agree, he's not the best. but, he's certainly made a name for himself...something all these people have failed to do. besides dean, i havent heard of 1 of these guys.
lets compare dean to sergio garcia...great at his sport, not the best, but certainly gets a lot of media attention. cant blame him for it. if someone offered me a ton of $ to do the things he does, id attempt them.

I don't see where I vote for Monica Lewinsky for that one...
I voted for Dean. In the context of ESPY awards, it's not about who is the fastest runner, it is about who is the BEST runner. Is Dean faster than someone like Webb or Hall? No. Is he better than Webb or Hall? Clearly.
I met Dean at a book store in Omaha last February. Next to my wife giving birth, it was truly the most emotional experience of my life. I felt so honored to be in the same room with a guy that has accomplished what he has.
Emotional? Ok..... I'm just glad Dean wasn't in the track and field category. I voted for the mountain climber girl.

LOL Hahaha! Great post.
Great interview with Steve Cram - says Jakob has no chance of WRs this year
I’m a D2 female runner. Our coach explicitly told us not to visit LetsRun forums.
