Is Dick Brown the one pushing this story? What, is he still trying to raise cash for his training center project?
Smith--in case you missed some of the recent stats, US distance running is in the crapper. Somebody should do something instead of piss and moan...hey, wait, somebody is--Hansons and Zap Fitness provide an option for those not quite elite enough to live in Alberto's altitude house or the farm team. I don't know the current status of Dick Brown's training center but I sure hope it happens--the more of these options for development we have the better.
Yo, Shippen Aluminum: Spread some of that digital clapping around. Our US distance elite are laying it on the line in Paris and they could use a pick me up. Speaking of their performances, if they had the mentality of Jonny Gill they'd be a hoppin' up on the medal stand!
The fact that Jon Gill gets ANY press says considerably more about the desperation of "sportswriters" (sic) to scoop the next darkhorse feel good story than it says about Gill himself.
Perspectives:
>Gill ran his PR (4:17) approximately half his lifetime ago
>Brown's claim to fame holds better 1500/mile PR's (Mary Decker). Perhaps Gill's problem isn't lack of speed, but rather, wrong gender
>Geb's 10,000-meter WR pace is faster than Gill's mile PR
>How far off of an Olympic qualifier is he? Gee, he's *only* ~34 seconds off the favorite.
This whole story is a disgrace to those who dedicated their lives, past and present, to the pursuit of Olympic dreams - on the right side of the law. Nothing against Gill, but wake us up when he qualifies for the trials. Until then, I'll save my cheers for those who deserve it.

I am the one who brought up 'applauding' Gill.
I guess what I exactly mean is I would rather applaud him for striving for something, rather than scold him for what he did 6 years ago. 'Applauding' him does not mean endorsing criminal behavior or alcoholism. It means encouraging his trying to make the best of another chance and follow a dream.
Do we really need to dwell on something he already paid for? In addition, is he supposed to tell the media to go home, because he does not deserve the positive attention?
Forgive and forget...If that's possible on a Message Board.
How about forget and forget. I am not scolding him or applauding him. Let the guy try and follow his pie in the sky dreams. I am just remarking that nobody applauds a good hard working person but if a person commits a crime and then is attempting to correct himself, he gets applauded for it. The person that always keeps out of trouble does not get any attention or admiration but the reformed criminal gets everybody's applause. This seems backwards too me.
Lord Bane,
The positive attention to Gill is backwards and you are right. Your view is sensible and level-headed...but at the same time, the hype does not surprise me. It is pure human interest. In fact, when he runs his first race on September 23rd, I will admittedly search for his results, even though others will be more deserving of the recognition.
But to note: The people I was directing the above comments to were the ones who were only bringing up the mistakes that he paid for for.
Yo bane, I've heard that pie in the sky expression before--from where is it derived? I think I know what you mean by the context but I was just curious if you knew its origin. Also, is your name a reference to the bad guy in Warlords III?

I don't know where "pie in the sky" originates.
I see from your name that you play Warlords III a lot. Lord Bane might be mentioned in that game somewhere, but he originates from the original game back in the late 1980's. In the original game, Lord Bane was the evil dark lord that ruled the northern part of Illuria. The mountains of Argundor encircled his citadel that made it tough to get to and attack. That was an awesome game for its time.
Very heart warming, just like golfer John Daily who is drinking like a f***ing fish now. By the time you read this I'm sure Gill will have a handgun and be on the way to rob another liquor store.
The main appeal of this f***ing story lies not its big sloppy bitch of a potentially "heartwarming" ending, but in its sheer f***ing absurdity. I'm not rooting against the prick, but what a huge load of bullshit. I'll be amazed as all cock if he even ducks the f*** under four. Christ. If someone in the U.S. runs 3:34 in the next couple of years I highly friggin' doubt it'll be a Goddamn 6' 3", 175-pound guy. What the tits is that all about?
The Bros-Jo should set up another f***ing prediction contest. In this one the motherf***er who comes closet to pinpointing the date on which Mr. Gill either gets pissy-assed drunk again or comes into contact with the f***ing legal system after some sort of further f***ing ill-conceived shenanigans would receive a $100 gift card for Track Town Fucking Pizza. Hell.
the thing that worries me is when he says he's never going to drink again
at AA on day one you learn to never say never, you take it one f***ing day at a time without a f***ing beer

I work hard at stuff nobody is applauding me. Why is it when a drunk gives up alcohol everybody applauds him/her? What about everyone else who were responsible enough to never get into that kind of trouble in the first place? They seem to get no applause at all. This guy is just all talk and the only applauding he will get is a courtesy applause for finishing last.
you want some applause? *clapping hands* nice f***ing work buddy. if this guy dedicates himself to running and it helps him put his life together, i don't care if he runs 4 flat or 3:30. i'll applaud him either way. and i'll applaud you for being such a good role model for those around you. if you're doing stuff for recognition, you're doing it for the wrong reason.
