I'm playing Ultimate Frisbee a couple times a week this summer. I usually play pretty hard, sprinting around a lot, etc. Could I use this to work on my speed, or am I just being weird (or both)?

dude i hear you
i hope i'm getting some kind of benefit from it 'cause we played for over 3 hours yesterday
one thing i have thought to do to ensure some kind of fitness gain is to run the 4-5 miles to the park to play. sometimes i run easy, sometimes i make it a tempo run.
Great workout! I use it for my high schoolers in the pre-season at least 1-2/week... Play barefoot on a synthetic field... Just have to be careful of injuries...(head on collisions)
It can be a good workout for high schoolers in the summer...but don't do it barefoot. Bad idea.
What's the bad idea about playing barefoot? Getting stepped on?

Bees? Little bits of rubber in a synthetic field?
My coach has said that running barefoot can make your feet stronger, which can help for running a bit
Bad idea. You're risking all sorts of injuries. Also its too much of an effort too early in the cross country season. Summer is part of cross country. Summer is for base. Don't f*** up your base.
when you play on a college team, it is very demanding. if you are a stack player you sprint constantly during each point and only get a minute break or so after each point unless you take a sub. plus a lot of cutting makes for constant acceleration. anyone would be sore as hell after their first practice. a little more relaxed for handlers, though.
our team plays ultimate on easy days. i go to high school so it is basically just something to promote fun for the kids who aren't as hardcore about running.
Playing for a real team is a workout for sure, especially if you don't have any subs. On a related note, I've been doing nothing but playing ultimate 3 days a week and running maybe 15-20 easy miles a week, and when a few buddies who still run track asked if I wanted to run a mile time trial with them last week, I just missed my PR by a few seconds. But I don't have an upcoming cross country season to worry about, either.
ultimate frisbee is fun...when your playing with good people. I play with my team and no one has motor skills, so it sucks the fun right out of the game
