That is categorically not true. Indie bands all have record labels (how do you think the record gets produced, released and distributed), but most don't have major ones . . . yet.For example, Built to Spill, a band most people haven't heard of, are on Warner Bros. Are they an "indie" band? Absolutely. Major label, for sure.However, Death Cab for Cutie, now on a major label, I wouldn't call them "indie."
