Well he came from Korea to my school about a year and a half ago and one of he first things he did was join XC. Well since than he has lost over 50 lbs and learned fluent english and scored above a 2200 on his SAT's, he has plenty of friends and can probably get into his dream school, Cornell.
Last year he was running around 30 mins for the 5k. Well since he lost so much weight he got himself down to around a 6:15 mile. The only thing is he is still very large. Well he has told me that he is sick of being fat and slow and wants to make our varsity squad. That will probably require around an 18 minute 5k. He told me he is willing to do whatever it takes to do it and he even suggested to me, running 5-7 miles twice a day so it is obvious this kid is pretty serious. He said he wants to dedicate his entire summer to just running. I have told him a few success stories about kids just like him and he is very motivated and believes it is possible. Well how should I go about helping someone make such a drastic change? The kid is completely dedicated and will do anything I tell him to. Most of the success stories I have heard about kids losing a ton of weight and becoming fast involves them running 100+mpw and it normally works. Should I have this kid do that? he never had any serious problems with injuries this last year but I suggested buying stability shoes. He took two weeks off after spring and I suggested that he runs 2-4 miles a day for the next week or two during finals so he can concentrate on that and get a slow start. That would put him roughly at about 25miles for the first week. Than he is ready to get serious. I plan on bumping him up to around 45-50mpw the next week in doubles and than getting him to around 60-70mpw. Than keep him at 70mpw and than bump him higher to around 80-85mpw. Should I go for the 100mpw mark? During the XC season last year I was running 60mpw and I had to add on a lot to get it. I probably wouldve been around 40 if I didnt add on. So this kid will probably be able to get 60mpw during the season. ANy adivce would be helpful. Nothing is crazy for this kid. thanks.
