i hope this isn't too rude to point out, but it's an interesting result: looks like st bon only beat one guy. never seen that before.
In Olean they refer to that as over-achieving.
richmond? - nobody saw that coming.
congrats to la salle...yet again
After months of hearing UMass & Dukes talk crap they haven't said anything today! It wasn't even close...wait till next year!! AGAIN!!!!!
someone from Richmond told me today they have no scholarships. And how many does La Salle have?
seems like their coach is the one really developing the talent
yet another example of brad herbsters lack of coaching abilities, embarassing
LaSalle gives 7 scholarships for men (track & XC combined) and 7 for the women. This is FAR under the maximun allowed by NCAA Div 1. Torpy does agreat job with very little money to offer.
Quite Correct, Great Job LaSALLE
Also Super job by unheralded Richmond
Next year is little solice, save everyone is back
Again great meet ya'll
All or nearly all of those 7 scholarships are invested in XC/distance so they are comitting as much or probably more (in some cases much more) to XC/distance then other A-10 schools who either spread it out or simply don't have 7 in the first place. It's a program philosophy thing and if you only have 7 to offer, focusing like that is a pretty good strategy if that's your natural/traditional strength as a program as you will always have a much better than average shot at winning at least one of the three annual championships. If that's what they want to do and the administration's behind them then more power to them.

Regardless of how many scholarships Lasalle has, Torpy does a fantastic job of developing runners. Lasalle isn't exactly the easiest school to recruit at (I sure as hell woudln't want to go there) so it's not like he's landing footlocker finalists left and right. Plus, I don't think you can argue that most of his athletes love him which shows he must be doing something right. Yes 7 scholarships is an advantage over most of the A-10 but there are plenty of other A-10 programs that have money and don't do much with it. Torpy is a strong coach and over the last 5-10 years he's been the best coach in the A-10, but I think this year Taylor at Richmond did the best job. If you break down the coaching of each team....
Lasalle - Can never complain when you win and this was sort of a rebuilding year.
Richmond - 0 scholarships and 2nd = fantastic job.
Duquesne - Lear consistently gets the most out of his guys although slightly subpar showing for them this year.
UMASS - Have some money and have landed some talent the last few years and have definitely improved. The coaching has been solid but not great and they still haven't lived up to their own message board talk.
St Joes - Have really had a rough last 4 years but have shown signs of bouncing back. I'm pretty sure Glavin has a decent amount of money to work with as well. The race used to be a fierce battle between St Joes and Lasalle but Torpy has owned Glavin of late.
Dayton - Hard to recruit when you don't have track but I think they have something like 5 scholarships. If Anderson had stayed healthy they could have been dangerous, but of course it's the coaches job to keep his athletes healthy.
GW - Not a bad showing for them this year. Still this is not a well coached team.
Xavier - Had a third place finish a few years ago when everyone else bombed and they didn't. Are very mediocre in cross and worse in track (only score points in relays) so can't give the coach much credit.
Charlotte - Have been decent in the past and have a great track program but this is ridiculous. They should never be out of the top 5. They have some resources and a nice campus.
Fordham - Consistently poorly coached.
Temple - I think the guy is new so give him a couple years to breathe life into a dead program.
St Louis - Word was they were getting better, apparently not. Can never claim you're well coached when you're hanging around double digits.
Rhode Island - A joke
St Bonnaventure - I'm actually really impressed by whatever monkey coaches this team. It's not easy to be this bad. I could take 5 clowns from the streets and beat this team.
This is the first I've heard of this in 3 years of A-10 running. Does Richmond really have 0 scholarships for guys?
no. that is not true
exactly 0 scholarships. They only have need-based aide that is available for anyone that attends the school. (athlete or not) basically like ivy league schools i believe
I know for a fact that the women's program is fully funded and the men's has absolutely zero scholarships.
UMASS Men have the equivalent to 2.5 scholarships for combined track and cross country.
UMASS Women have 10 for track and cross country.
Yes, UMASS Men need to talk a little less on message boards, but when you rely on Freshmen and Sophomores, race to race consistency can be a process of learning lessons of jubilation, humility, redemption, and triumph.
Now on to the regionals. Who will recover from the slop of this weekend to run well at the regionals? Does Thorpy have more magic in the hair?
whose ryan bender and why is his ghost posting?
