i would imagine it would be hard to recruit to vandy, not only with the academic standards but socially it sounds like there is a christian vibe on the womens team and the non track population is filled with wannabe state school fratboys

You misunderstood what I am saying.I am just giving you the facts from a recent news paper article( USA Today) Once an athete goes to MSU, the stay there and graduate from there, just as they do @ Vandy. I don't know anything about their admissions standard, I am just stating what I read. Is USA a reliable news source? That is the question...
Mississippi State is a cow college stuck in the middle of one of the ugliest towns in America. I do hear they graduate smart bovine.

First of all, as a Vandy alum (class of '83), it's amazing to me to see this much discussion about the track team.
Second, while I don't know what the reasons for the present coach's non-renewal, I'd like to point out that there haven't been that many full time track coaches at Vandy since the 70's. The fact they hired her predecessor and her was encouraging to me to begin with.
The ability of the present athletic department management (i.e., the University President, et al.) remains to be seen. Historically, the management has been trying to be a "state school" sports department at a University trying to be an Ivy League institution (an ironic term, since the Ivy league referred to the sports teams). I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt.
Things that make me hopeful are the hosting of the SEC champs a couple of years ago. The outgoing coach had something to do with that, as well as the current administration. Things that would make me more hopeful would be the return of the men's track team.
I know that in my day, the track/cross country and swim teams were always the two highest GPA groups at Vandy. Then they got rid of men's track and swimming, and women's swimming. It looks like they've brought back women's swimming, but it seems like a school with "Ivy" aspirations might consider focusing on the higher achieving sports.
