Ray to UC Riverside

Ray was canned because Hall's dad wanted to take over, thought he knew better. I am still amazed Ryan ran that well his senior year, but it goes to prove that what you put in during the fall and winter is what carries you, even if you get screwed up in your training. It was a real struggle with Ray on one side and Mickey Hall on the other. Believe me-the success Ryan had was due to Irv Ray's training. Bottom line.

Why is everyone talking about Hall going to UCR...Im sure thats not true...or is it? How good is UCR right now? Boys and girls?

Irv Ray's training did what Irv Ray's training usually does, with runners doing great in midseason and struggling to hold on at the end. You are among the 90% that did not REALLY know what has going on with Ryan Hall in high school. Best races WERE when dad coached and bad races WERE when Ray coached.

If it is true that Miller is going back to Irv's program, I think he has made a good decision. He ran very well the year after he worked with Irv. I know he had some problems with the way Irv peaked him, but I think Irv has made some positive changes in that area; one in which we all struggle.

Anyone in the know about Hall's situation...is he still going to run for Stanford?

Hall is still at Stanford and the last I heard, he intends to remain there.

As far as I had heard Ryan was willing to go back to running for Irv, but Ryan's mother wanted a Stanford degree.

Ryan always seemed like a bit of a headcase to me. I think part of the reasons he hasnt done as well at nationals at least in cross is that you see him absolutely pounding and hammering these races early season, just killing himself mentally and physically, where you see guys like Sage, Luchini, and Tenforde running hard but relaxed- more like a tempo, often talking and sometimes goofing around in races.

Seems that Irv Ray should have the resources to do more with the program than the previous coach. Turns out they are devoting more of the allowable scholarship help to the program than in the past.

Basically, he will have almost twice the scholarship resources the previous coach had. If they don't do way better now, then it's a real shame.

I was living with the Halls at the time. I don't recall seeing you around the house, so I know what I am talking about when I say Ryan's best races came under Ray. The times he ran poorly were when his dad stepped in and there became doubt and conflict and some suspect workouts.
