Relationships with runners

i think runners should be with runners. i've seen enough death by marriage unions to last a lifetime.

Does this assume equal levels of hotness (or non-hotness)? I've always had a thing for runners (I don't know why), so everything else being equal, I would definitely be most attracted to the girl who was a serious, competitive (hopefully cute) runner.

Uh, don't relationships generally consist of "two people who can't do any better?" Whatever the meaning of better, most people will get it if they can.

I support her interests plenty, but that's not what this thread is about. We have a very good relationship.

Runners, recreational or competitive, usually have a lifelong committment to taking care of their health by means of exercise. However, love is blind and our hormones don't match our interests.

My XW was a nonrunner, but was fairly active when we first met, but not dedicted to exercise, eating healthy, or fitness. The whole marriage she steadily gained weight until she was 80 lbs overweight after 10 years. It goes along with the territory, that while we had no problem hiking, biking, playing outdoors with kids early in the relationship, when it gets to that point active recreation is difficult and their is a complete compatibility gap. She was totally sedentary after 10 years and refused any interest in recreation, choosing sedentary hobbies. On top of that she adopted the classic low self esteem of an obese person being married to a runner, even though I didn't nag about weight.

My new spouse is also a nonrunner, although she pretends from time to time. She was VERY active when we first met, rollerblading, skiing, hiking, biking, etc. with me. However, she did not have the discipline to keep up with routine exercise and healthy and controlled eating after she got pregnant, so pretty much the same thing happened. So for the last 5 years she has been 60 pounds overweight, doesn't eat right, exercises in brief spurts until she loses motivation. She is starting to become more sedentary, but still has a spark of interest for hiking and biking, but her body can't go very long or far. Wait a few years and she will be just as bad as my XW.

The lesson in all of this is, while you may *THINK* your partner will maintain interest and discipline to exercise and stay fit their whole life, the reality is that runners exhibit a personality pattern that more often than not allows them to retain the resiliency to continue exercising and watch their weight later in life, while active people who are nonrunners are more likely to succomb to our society's trend to become fat, lazy, and overeaters as they age.

So while it seems shallow for a runner to only want to marry a nonrunner, and in fact it seriously limits the gene pool for selection, nevertheless, if are a runner and want your spouse to have a good level of committment to staying fit in their later years, marrying a runner is probably one of the most successful strategies to ensure that your partner's personality will remain focused on health and fitness in the years to come.

It sounds to me that, other than running, you enjoy a generally active lifestyle with other outdoor hobbies/recreation. So that philosophy makes sense for you. But it may not for everyone.

I, for example, like to run, but that's pretty much it. It's just not that important to me to be outside doing things other than running. Having said that my wife enjoys being outside occasionally and it is enjoyable to spend a nice afternoon walking on the trail with her and my little girl.

My wife is a non-runner and that's the way I like it. I feel this way for a number of reasons. The first of which is my attitude toward running in general. I started in the sport to lose weight when I was young, gradually became obsessed with it, and developed an eating disorder. For the most part that's behind me now but running represents a residual effect of destructive, obsessive thinking. I enjoy it for what it is and I like to compete but it still carries the patina of mental disorder. Secondly, to the extent that I can enjoy running for what it is, I feel it is "my" time, to get away from everything for an hour to two hours and destress. I cannot fathom, for example, having a wife who runs and trying to construct a schedule running with her. I would rather just go and get it over with whenever I can. My wife and I have a lot in common and a lot of things we like to do together so I don't feel it's necessary to work out together as well.

So, the long and the short of it is, I think it depends on what your general personality is like, how you view running, and what your relationship is like or can be like.

Maybe in your case your relationship exists because you couldn't do any better. Read: You had to settle for your girlfriend because you couldn't get the girls who were out of your league.

Well, here's the thing. I like the fact that my husband runs. It's something we share. But I wouldn't love him and have chosen to marry him just because he runs. There are plenty of runners out there that I would never want to be with. How he approaches his running and my running as well as all the other important and inconsequential things in life make him who he is. It's the whole picture that makes it work. If he didn't run, it would have been harder for us to meet, but I would still love him and still have married him. The way he is, I know he would support my running whether he ran or not. The way I am, I know I would support him in whatever he did whether it was running or not. So running is almost a red herring when it comes to choosing someone to have a relationship with. You might as well think, I have to marry a doctor because I am a doctor and who else would understand what it would be like to be a doctor except another doctor? I can certainly see the point to that line of thought, but there is just so so so much more to relationships than this.

I think that runners and true athletes know and understand discipline. They understand the consistency and regularity that is necessary to do something and do it well.

I am turned off by people who don't have this type of mentality about SOMETHING in their life. However, I undestand that this may come in the form of career, etc.

At the same time I appreciate a commitment to exercise REGULARLY. It shows that a person care enough about themselves to take care of themselves, really for their own sake. I don't think I'd be happy with someone who thought otherwise.

Soundsfamiliar. Similiar situation where 2 teammates started getting serious (at least she says it's a "serious relationship"). Unfortunately though, the guy broke the brotherhood code of Bros B4 Hos. Friendships were destroyed and team dynamics are all messed up now. Some times it feels like the team is one big soap opera.

I don't know if I agree with the hookup. Personally, if I were a captain of a team, only if the girl was the one I wanted to marry and spend the rest of my life with, I would not have made the decision to start a serious thing with a teammate especially when a friendship and the morale of the team was at stake. Soon enough the attraction will fade and the relationship will end in time and in the end was it really worth it to mess up a team?

For me, if it's the girl I want to spend the rest of my life with then you break the Bros B4 Hos brotherhood. Otherwise it's not worth it and you lose some great friendships become estranged from them and the team. Peace and bold out.

choice 3...the girl who works out some, but is not a competitive runner. When 2 good runners hook up, it usually ends when one of their careers goes downhill or they lose interest in running.

No one can get girls who are out of their league. If you can get her, she is in your league.

What's your point? The poster never said that you could get girls who were out of your league. His statement says that you had to settle for a girl in your league becuase you couldn't get girls who were out of your league.

Its impossible to get a girl out of your league. Anybody that you can have a relationship with is "in your league." The way he used the cliche is illogical. "read harder" wasn't a very good username for whomever posted that.

What? Are you sure you know what I actually said? Because it was very similar to what you said.

I would agree - my wife and I are both runners... luckily we also happen to run similar times, we're both around 17 flat for a 5k

We're in our 30s and running is and never was a lifestyle or career choice just something we both loved. If she didn't run I would still love her but one thing that is great about being married to a runner - we get to spend nearly an hour a day together nearly everyday of the week.

I think that is important when schedules are crazy and couples don't spend anytime together. On our easy runs we talk and laugh, it is great.

As the other guy said on here... I also love that she is fit enough to do just about anything outdoors. We hike, bike, whatever... she is fit and loves doing these things. And an added bonus (not that it really matters but it is nice), she still has a slamming body, she weighs the same now as she did when she was 17 and looks great.

To each his own - but I for one have definitely found more positive aspects of being married to a runner than negative aspects.
