My friend and I were debating this topic on our long run Sunday.
It is my point of view that any race that charges a fee, no matter how large or small should offer prize money of some sort. The smaller the race (or fee) the smaller the prize purse, etc.
The fact is it is a slap in the face to athletes who train there ass off to go to a race with little or no support. If the local 5k (one in my area has a regular entry of over 5,000 people and offers no prize money) offered money it would promote the sport and help those trying to make it to the next level. Imagine if the NFL didn’t play its players and gave all the revenue to charities? The NFL would not be what it is today.
Races that don’t offer prize money are not only a slap in the face to the athletes running it is bad for the sport, and that is a real shame.
The other side he took was, "why offer prize money when you don't have to...its bad business." For example, the wharf to wharf sells out every year whether they have prize money or not. Who cares about elites?
