I know many well established elite marathon runners will take 4-8 weeks off after a major marathon. This is followed 4-8 regaining fitness. And then begin a 12 week marathon prep.
For a developing athlete I think it's necessary to continually impoving this becomes especially difficult if your always preparing for the next race.
