Maybe in the winter. I stayed the summer there once, and found it a good bit less than ideal. Just normal Deep South heat and humidity... oh, and no altitude.
Trained in Tallahassee for 4 weeks during the winter break of 95/96. Great place to train and spent alot of those 4 weeks training with Breeda Denehy. On a side note, Breeda went on to run 15:12 and 32:10, I think?????
Sprawl has gobbled up a lot of the trails in Gainesville. But Tally as a city is a S#*t hole. I would still pick Gville over Tally.
There are parts of the town that are crummy, but that can be said for most cities. I really enjoyed myself when I lived there. Very pretty area with plenty of trails/dirt roads and nice weather. I'd go back for a stint in a heart beat.
Tallahassee = LA. LA = Lower Alabama.
If Tallahassee was one of the best places to train in America I'm sure we could name some national class runners who train there. Off the top of my head I can't think of any.
When people talk of the best places to train - Boulder, Eugene, Mammoth Lakes, Madison, Palo Alto - there is usually a group of top distance talent training there. While there may be some talent in Tallahassee it is not as deep as any of the aforementioned cities. So I'll say "No" to Tallahassee.
ZAP Fitnes has been training here for 5-6 weeks since '02. Last year the Oregon project was here with coach Dennis Balaz, John Cook and his people (Shalane, R Donoghue) and now word is out - Ritz, Hartmann and the Torres brothers are on the way with their coach...Hudson in a couple of weeks. They have been in touch with local h.s. coach for track access (word gets out fast). While the town of Tallahassee (I agree) may be a bit of a s_ _ t hole, the venues (grass parks, rolling hills, dirt roads are in greater quantity than in any town I've ever lived in ...including Eugene and Boulder.
I grew up there, and except for the summer, it is a great place to train. There are tons of trails, plenty of hilly terrain, lots of high school tracks that you can almost always get on, etc.
Yeah it's good. Just check out the gulfwinds track club website.
Tallahassee is an amazing place to train. Hundreds of miles of trails to run on, and there is a great local track club(gulfwinds). The FSU program has turned out many studs in recent years, along with all the pros that come down, there is a plethora of talent here.
I'm still a local college student just running on my own, and would much rather be here than gainesville.
There are few better places to train in the winter months than Tally.
when are ritz, torres, and those guys coming to t-town?
Maybe the surrounding area is good for training, but the city itself sucks. Hundreds of miles to train on? Who are you trying to kid? There are some trails, but you really shouldn't explore them on your own because there are gators everywhere and spiders you don't want to mess with. People driving their cars when they see you running stop to ask you what the hell you're doing, and it rains almost every day during the rainy season.
Trust me I could find hundreds of miles to train in the Leon county area, mostly Tallahassee.
gators and spiders? whats the chances of getting bit? very unlikely.
Rain is good when it's so humid and hot out, cools the place down a hell of a lot.
Tell the people in the cars to piss off.
Greater Tallahassee is awesome. Youcan almost always see dolphins jumping near the pier at Deerfield Beach. 1st Place Sports putrs on a great series of races all year around, and the Double Bridge 5K/15K is popular. You're just a stone's throw away from some of the most legendary venues in all of distance running: the Florida State Capitol Building, the Georgia Dome, Heartbreak Hill, the Vancouver Sea Wall, the Taj Majal, and Mare Tranquilium.
You'll want a car or at least a bus pass to take full advantage, as the northernmost reaches of Tally are better in the summer.
Bump.
What’s Tallahassee like these days? A lot more pros go there to train. NOP, Hoka NyNJ, BAA, Hanson’s, the list goes on. Considering moving here.
Former Tally resident here. I was involved with (guilty of) multiple hit and run incidents while I was there. Never stuck around, as having my car searched would be way worse than taking a gamble on being caught. Never got caught. My friends didn't see this as objectionable. That's all you need to know about Tallahassee.
a place to have a training camp for a month during winter? great spot
a place to live? wouldn’t recommend it
Tallahassee (FSU) produced Colleen Quigley.
I agree with the previous poster that I would not want to live there. Not much going on unless you’re attending FSU or in politics.
I’d pick Gainesville or Clermont over Tallahassee for running and as a better place to live. All three are brutally hot and humid in the summer though. Dew points in the mid to high 70s for several months straight. The upside is November through March provides perfect running weather. Great training for Boston, if that’s your goal.
RIP: D3 All-American Frank Csorba - who ran 13:56 in March - dead
Great interview with Steve Cram - says Jakob has no chance of WRs this year
RENATO can you talk about the preparation of Emile Cairess 2:06
I’m a D2 female runner. Our coach explicitly told us not to visit LetsRun forums.
