Hey, Terry Drake; at the Lakewood Mall today, (los angeles area), I saw a guy wearing a Bethany Swedes sweatshirt! lol
Reed won state in 1976, nearly shaving a full minute off his time the year before. He went to Harvard and ran, burned out a bit, took time off then went back. Is now VP and CIO for a non-profit group called HIMSS. Very successful person
I ran at Hutch Juco 1975-1977. We were better than all of the 4 year schools like Ft Hays, Emporia St., etc. Our CC team took 4th in the nation in 1976 Cross Country. We had 2 - CC All Americans that year. David Zuk (me) 12th for 5 miles 24:01 and Dennis Weber 24th. Dennis is now the Head Track at Ft. Hays State. Ted Crank and I ran at Hutch High and I don't believe they have had anyone beat our PR's since we left. Ted went 4:20.5 in the mile and 9:22.0 in the 2 mile. I went 4:22.0 in the mile and 9:28.8 in the 2 mile. I think today too many kids aren't willing to put in the work to post good high school times.
Not sure who KCTrack is, but based on your posts we probably ran against each other.
Is there an all time high school list for the mile? I scanned through the thread and didn't find one. The college list below is from page one. Gene McClain ran 4:10 in high school and won the Golden West Invitational in '64. He hung with Ryun for most of the way in his 4:06 national record on a very humid and radiant 98 degree day. I'm pretty sure that Charlie Harper of Wichita North ran 4:01.0 at KState after his 4:19 in '63.Does anyone know when Alan Walker ran at Derby and WSU?
I found it. Walker went to WSU from 1969-73, so he must have been class of '69 in high school. I'm curious what times he ran in high school.
1) Jim Ryun(1967)....................Wichita East'65......Kansas...............3:51.1
2) Doug Peterson(1981).............Lawrence'77.........Nor thwestern......(3:57.1) 3:39.31
3) Archie San Romani, Jr(1964)...Wichita East'59.....Oregon...............3:57.6
4) John Mason(1971)................????????????.........Fo rt Hays...........3:57.9
Time in parenthesis are eqivalent mile times extrapolated from their best 1500
Any updates or corrections are welcome.

John Mason graduated from Phillipsburg High School in 1964.
/quote: "don't forget the Orozco brothers, little Pete and big bro Joe out of Phillpsburg. Both top runners in the early to mid 70s."
If I remember correctly, the Orozco brothers ran at Ellsworth High School.

Dave Houchin was an undefeated state mile champ from Wichita south.
Dave Houchin was undefeated outdoors in '70.
I had the pleasure of running with the likes of Dave Anderson, Paul Francis, Pat Kirchoff and Ryan Eichner. Although I, too, had disputes with Coach Schmidt, I came to respect the man. I didn't realize till after I graduated in 1970, how much of influence Coach had in my life. Although his world may have seemed to be all about "running," there was so much more. In spirit, somehow and, maybe in a small way, Coach will always be apart of my upbringing. As my long time friend and teammate John Ritland said recently, "I (seems) hear Coach's voice every time I run."

If we scored these times like XC, here would be the results (I didn't exclude the 'non-scoring'
6th/7th etc runners from each period):
1960s:
4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, 14th, (46th), (51st)
= 36pts
early 70s (70 - 74):
2nd, 8th, 12th, 15th, 17th (22nd), (23rd), (26th), (31st), (32nd), (33rd), (37th), (45th), (56th), (58th)
= 52pts
late 70s (75 - 79):
1st, 3rd, 18th, 20th, 23rd (26th), (34th), (36th), (37th), (40th), (50th), (53rd), (60th), (61st)
= 65pts
early 80s (80 -84):
48th, 53rd, 56th, 61st = incomplete team
late 80s (85- 89):
11th, 15th, 19th, 23rd, 49th
= 117pts
early 90s (90-94):
10th, 29th, 53rd = incomplete team
late 90s(95 - 99):
9th, 13th, 21st, 42nd, 42nd
= 127pts
early 2000s (00 - 04):
28th, 35th, 41st, 52nd, 59th
= 215pts
late 2000s (05 - 09):
44th, = incomplete team
2010 - 2015:
no one on the list
What's interesting is not that Kansas had some phenominal runners in the 1960s & 1970s but the fall-off in performances since.
Runners from the 1970s comprise half of this list ...
and in the four decades since only eleven runners have reached the top half of this list;
since 2001, only four runners have even made the list.
In the 1970s, Kansas high school runners regularly ran against competitors in the 9:20 range throughout the track season;
since then only a few outliers have run this fast and almost always on their own or against out-of-state competition.
I say is has much to do about soccer. Took a lot of the guys away from XC that over time could have run quick.
Also the coaching level at the Shawnee Mission schools was top quality. Schmidt, Rose, Carl O. got the the most out of the guys they had. When you get 50 guys out fo XC, you can work them hard, breaking a few along the way but the 7-15 you end up with can really produce.
Kansas high school all-time list has been updated through May 29, 2017. Here's the link: http://media.varsitykansas.com/smedia/2017/06/03/23/46/RFaKT.So.161.pdf

Amazing list of performances.
I was just wondering, from far from Kansas, what changed since that period and soccer is a key factor.
Who was the guy who ran 4:09 for Wichita North in 1965?
He was in the state meet going back and forth with Petterson, and had a faster time for the season (4:09 I think) but isn't on the list in previous message.
There's an old man in my county I see every once in a while at meets. I've talked to him twice and both times he told me he ran with Jim Ryun at KU. He told me how he was the three/four man on the cross team. He also told me to do all my miles on grass and to run twice a day everyday. Not sure how fast this guy was or even what his name is, but I cross paths with him every once in a while and he tells me the same stories. Does anyone out there have any idea who this guy is/could be?
Trey Harrison- 13:42
Tim Gundy- 13:42 (?)
