For me, I always have raced 5k races better if I am about 5 sec. slower off goal pace my first mile. This allows me to run a much much faster last mile and a stronger sprint finish. Even a stronger 100-200 meters can make up 5 - 10 sec.
I also think that a highly conditioned athlete can withstand the load of a fast start better than a less experienced racer. It would be interesting to see the results with various fitness/experience levels (not necessarily the pace run).
give it up frank. you're never gonna get faster.
That may be a result for those that run 6:51 a mile. It may be different for high schoolers, college runners, or elites.
