Paul McMullen, 34, is a most unlikely marathoner. McMullen was once described as "a giant among reeds on the track, thick-chested, huge shoulders and arms, he seemed out of place among the wafer-like milers he competed against." At 6'2" and 180 pounds, the stark contrast in physique will be even more pronounced as McMullen turns his attention to the world of marathoning. Paul's goal of qualifying for the U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials will be tested at the Austin Marathon on February 18. McMullen, an eight-time NCAA All-American, graduated from Eastern Michigan University in 1995. At his specialty of 1500 meters, he was the 1996 Olympic Trials 1500-meter champion, 1995 USA Outdoor champ and 1998 USA Indoor mile champ and tenth at the 1995 and 2001 World Championships outdoors. His personal bests are: 1500m-3:33.89 (2001), Mile-3:54.94 (2001) and 800m-1:45.71 (2001). McMullen lives and trains in Michigan, where he is a pharmaceuticals sales representative. On January 1, he won the Resolution Run, a four-miler in Grand Rapids, in 19:59.
