I visiting a friend of mine a few years back and we went out Saturday morning to run the trail around Salem Lake. He was doing an 15-miler and I was going to run 6 miles at my blazing 9 minute or so pace.

Anyway, near the end of the last mile around the lake, I started hearing footsteps and I saw maybe 70 yards back a blonde chick gaining on me.

I get competitive for some reason and put it into overdrive, maybe 7:30 pace at best, and barely make it back to the parking lot before her.

It turned out to be Blake Russell, home to visit her parents and she'd been running the 30K route at Salem Lake and was obviously running much, much faster than me and three times as far.

She was nice enough to chat with me for a minute despite the fact I was a total ass.

You don't have to feel competitive with ANY girl - no matter what level. From the girl's point of view, having a guy as a training partner is great! Guys can give ya a real good push. Don't feel like you have to beat us. Hey, some girls are obviously faster than some guys anyway. It's just racing on days when we should all be training or just enjoying ourselves, can, in the end hurt us. We need to go with instinct on those days we plan on taking it easy and a "race" might not work out to well. If you start the race, think about the consequences - hurt feelings, HURT BODIES, etc. You don't want to come across as a jerk either. Say "good job" or "Hi" and pass on by if you want. It will make you the "winner" both physically and mentally.

Ignore them - even if you can't. Or talk to them. Or do anything except change your pace for them. Seriously, you know what pace you want to run for your workout. Don't let someone else change that. Don't give someone else that power. Remember that racing takes the same kind of mental toughness - the ability to run within yourself no matter what kind of foolishness is going on around you. So use these jerks as a training tool. Relax. Focus on your pace. If they don't drop off after awhile, stop and let them pass. Use the moment to stretch. Get a drink of water. Or as some other posters have suggested, change direction yourself.

As a 45-year-old runner, I get this same treatment on a regular basis (young runners - both guys and gals - don't want to be passed by a bald old fart). I don't blame them. I probably wouldn't like it either. So I ignore them. And eventually they fall off or they don't - it doesn't matter to me.

And while they go home overworked, overtrained, and in store for soreness and a rotten run the next time out, I live to race another day.

one of my favorite incidents had to be last summer when i was doing a twelve or so mile run in prospect park. as i'm running, i pass a guy pushing a stroller, but not just any stroller, one of those silly (or maybe not so silly) fitness strollers. anyway, he looks at me kind of pissed and i can feel him increase his pace. he waits until a downhill segment of the park and takes off sprinting down the hill. i restrained myself, only to have him stop right at the next intersection where the park flattens. i thought maybe i was being silly thinking he was racing me until he looked over at me as he stopped and so i just looked back at him and laughed.

I gotta say, ever since I started this thread I am more paranoid than ever. All I do is wonder who the people are that are running by. Are they people that anonymously mocked my plight on Letsrun? Are they sympathetic to my cause? Do they wonder how I would react if they turned around and started racing me? I feel like I'm back in the seventh grade.

Anyway, I'm the dude running in either a black long sleeve or a white St George Marathon shirt. I always run with my ancient IPod firmly in hand. Holla at me, but please don't race me.

You've got no reason to worry, I don't race with joggers.
