My boyfriend earns 400,000/year . He wants me to pick out an engagement ring but I have not asked him directly how much he is willing to spend. The ones I like are 20,000 and 24,000. Do you think that 20k to 30k for a ring is too much considering his salary?

The general rule of thumb is two months salary, so you are not asking for too much. 20 to 30K will be a huge rock.

HELL YES! It's a freakin ring lady.
I went with my friend to pick out rings. What a crock of shit the sales people throw out. They were pushing this "investment" quality diamond on him until I started laughing. They asked me what I was laughing at, and I said "you". I told him that was without doubt the WORST investment I had ever heard of - a GUARANTEED return of ABSOLUTELY $0.
Either you stay married forever, in which case you get nothing back. Or you get divorced and you get nothing back. Great fricken investment.
A nice 2 carat. Tops. Anything more is for spoiled brats. Only a pussy beta male would give more than a 2 carat. I've been married 25 years, my wife has a 1 carat and an alpha male that all her friends want to get in the sack. -
yeah the ones I like are 2.0 ct. center stones with small .5-.7 side stones. I wonder if this will be too big for my bony size 3.5 finger? haha..but thanks for your input:)

Bum.... damn we've missed you!!! Nice post. -
Go for something even bigger and more expensive. That way, when he dumps you for a younger woman you can pawn the damn thing and live off the money for awhile.

Funny, but the general rule was written by the diamond industry. Get one that is bigger than most of your friends, but doesn't look too gawdy.
I also don't believe that a running chick who trolls on letsrun can get a $400K per anum boyfriend, so I say BS to this post. -

Real alpha males make a hell of a lot more than you, biff. Don't kid yourself, women want to be with the leaders of society not poor people who can't even afford a $25k ring once in a lifetime. Justifying being penniless and cheap doesn't make you a stud.
And if you have to call yourself an alpha male, you aren't. Try and talk yourself into it all you want, but you know you're inadequate because of your puny wallet.
Buy what you want, and what you can afford. That's your answer. -

What a horrible way to live life. -
I know three guys that make about the same amount as your boyfriend. They started their own company and so they basically all have the same income. It really depends on the personality. One dude got his wife a 1.25 carat solitaire from Tiffany's, and he put most of his money towards the quality of the diamond. I forget what the clarity and inclusion scale is, but he went for the best. He still only spent $20k-$25k.
Another guy got a 3 stone ring. I think the center stone is about 1 carat and the side stones are about 0.5 carat's and he also spent a lot on the quality and this is probably my favorite of the three rings. I don't know what he spent, but this is a sweet ring. His wife doesn't care about brandname bullsh!t, so he didn't pay the extra ~5k that Tiffany's marks up on their crap.
The last guy to get married spent $25k also, but he bought this thing that just looks retarded. It's 2 carats and 2 carats, in my opinion, just looks stupid. It's too big to be on a woman's finger, unless she has man hands. Which might explain why my mother-in-law's 2-carat ring looks about the right size.
The thing about the first two rings, that I think stands out, is their quality. They always look shiny and catch my eye, more than the 2-carat ring. So make sure you get good quality and you keep it clean. A clean, polished, high-quality diamond looks a million times better than a big diamond. -

The sex that you get in exchange is real! If you know what I mean. -
I spent 16 hours pay on my wife's ring. I am a big fan of the 2 day rule.

What the f uck does your boyfriend do that gets him 400,000 a year and how many b******s do you have to give to keep him?
-
Diamonds can now be synthetically made, any colour etc can be made or soon can be made synthetically... so whats the point of buying an expensive ring... to have a heavy rock on your finger thats losing value? Have the overworked fool get you a set a pearls, etc. from tiffanys to match... no point in losing an extra ten grand on a ring you might misplace or grow sick of... get something unique... arent authentic black pearls popular or something like that...
-
Look, I really don't care if people don't believe my boyfriend makes that much..if you really want to know he is a dermatologist.
To the people with the good advice, thanks. I think I am going to focus on diamond quality over size since my finger is small. Thanks again for the help! -

You're a f***tard. You want to see the biggest gathering of alphas, go to a fricken fire station. Firefighters got it. And they make about 1/2 of what I make.
And alphas also know how to read. Which apparently you can't do, because you failed to realize that a chick started this post, and she isn't buying anything.
Buy the cheapest thing you can get away with. If she insists on more than 2 carats, then you're a pussy if you don't sack up hold your ground. -
I've worked in a pawn shop for many years and I can tell you that anyone who pays the marked up prices these friggin so called "jewelers" charge for diamonds is a fool. There are plenty of places to get diamonds twice as clear and cleaner cut than the name brand dealers. Go make friends with a pawn broker and you'll find a great deal. Otherwise, you're just wasting your boyfriends money.
Also, even though I responded, I think this is a trollie mcsockpuppet type thread and I'm surprised he hasn't called you out yet.
And for alpha male, the guy who said "if you call yourself an alpha male, you're not" hit the nail on the head. You probably suffer from small man's syndrome...great job napolean. -
Personally I think 20,000+ is way too much for any ring no matter who you are. I mean honestly, take the 10,000 dollar ring and give 10,000 dollars to a children's cancer hospital. I guarantee it will (or should) make you feel better than having the extra quality. And you're friends won't care at all how nice your ring is. They'll either resent you for outdoing them all the time or simply realize that marriage is about love and not finanaces.
Please don't be so superficial. -
I was pretty much in the same salary range as your boy- 14k was plenty for me..hard to tell the differencr on anything from like 10k-30k anyway
