The dependent variable is the tooth
The independent variable is the candy
The tooth is the dependant variable because it is what is being affected by the candy.
The candy is the independent variable because you can vary its amounts

The dependent variable is the one that depends on what happens with the other variables. The independent variables are the ones you change. In your example the dependent variable is chance of tooth decay. You could measure it by number of cavities in the last year. The Independent variables might include:
Frequency of eating candy or quantity of candy consumed in a week.
Frequency of drinking sweetened drinks (including soda, juice, etc.)
Frequency of brushing
Frequency of flossing
Number of routine dentist visits per year (0,1,2,3)
Age
Some kind of proxy for general health
Sex (male or female not yes or no)
Mother have a large number of cavities while growing up?
Father have a large number of cavities while growing up?
Instead of the two previous questions you might just ask if either of the parents had cavities while growing up.
