I don't think anyone is saying SUU will have a junk team next year, I think the point people are making is the absurd boasting of "running for a national title". I'm sure its exiting to be part of a team thats improving, but letting your mouth write checks your ass can't cash makes you seem like a joke.
I'm sure the guy is a decent coach, but just look at the statements he's throwing out.
1. Beating Colorado... they lost by what, 5 points, and they didn't run their best 2 runners... i bet that got left out of the paper and his recruiting calls
2. His incomming class - so when on earth do teams rely that heavily on incomming freshman to be superstars. Right there is a recipe for disaster.
3. Presure - That coach just put a heavy burden on the back of Jesse and the rest of the team. Now its not just a team goal, but an expectation from the rest of the country to "put up or shut the f*** up". That coach didn't strike fear into the rest of the country, in fact, the rest of the country probably welcomes them in... but if you want to run with the big boys, you better have more bite than bark, and when you're talking about how the best highschool kid in nevada and 2 other highschoolers are going to help your 10k cross country national team "run for the title", your all bark.
I think its great that SUU gives chances to guys who wouldn't have the opportunity to run at a bigger school. In fact, I think the hole Jesse story is great and could be pretty inspirational to many. But to come out a week after the meet talking like your Wisconsin, Stanford, Ark, Colorado, Oregon, and a few more based on a theoretical spread and incomming frosh... your asking for trouble.
You don't need to defend his coaching, let it speak for itself, and if it doesn't next year, we'll all be right back here having a good laugh. Until then, Keep your team goals to your team, and let the running do the talking.
