Kenyan 2:18
Belarus 2:20 (last years winner)
Jurcevich 2:20
Kenyan 2:21
Cordes 2:21
Females no americans under 2:47
Very tough day with winds at over 15mph measured at 25mph gusting to 35mph at the finish. Wind chill was 26F.
The lack of any American women under 2:47 wasn't due to a lack of talent but rather the conditions. There were several American women shooting for 2:40-2:42.

Do you think the wind had that large of an effect on their times? I was about 5 minutes off my goal, but the wind was brutal. It felt like I was dragging something.
Several american women shooting for 2:40-2:42? I don't believe that there was one american women that had ever broken 2:45 before. If they were shooting for 2:40 it is easy to see why the failures.

What's the deal with the 5k? Hanson dude wins in 17 min??
Rumor has it...that a lead police vehicle went the wrong way within the first mile...adding something like 600 - 800 meters to the course. Is there anyone out there that can confirm this?
And yes.... there was a brutal wind coming from the west. So the runners had to fight the last few miles. I'm sure the Chicago folks can relate.

The lead vehicle DID go the wrong way inside the first mile. Unknown where he went & how much extra he added right now. NOT the first time this had happened at a Doug Kurtis designed course.

Not sure if the cops or the lead vehicle were prepared for the leaders running that fast or what, but 2 minutes into the race, Moen and Sheehan turned to Keith Hanson and I and asked if they were going the right way. With a new course I had not studied the map, but my wife and 6 year old son were running so I hoped not. Here's a clue-when you see a road race where the streets are not blocked and traffic coming at the lead runners from both directions and no cones or anything to let you know you're going the right way, you're probably not going the right way. Last year, it was the 1/2 'thon, now the 5K.
The rumor is true...complete screw up with the lead vehicle.
I really wish they would get their act together. I only ran the half, so I can't speak about the second 13.1 miles of the race, but the course markings were horrible. There were no mile 3 or 4 markers. Mile 5 seemed to be on the mark, but then 1000 meters later, we roll on mile 6. Mile 7 was probably short and I know mile 8 in the tunnel was way off. From that point on, I gave up on the splits.
Fast forward to the gear check disaster. After an hour of waiting and them looking, I left without my bag. Sad thing was, I wasn't the only person in the same situation.
I'm from the area and I read recently that Detroit wants to compete with likes of Chicago, New York and London. Until they can put the mile markers in the right spot and not treat your gear check like you're on Northwest airlines, it's never going to happen.
Why does this happen to so many races in downtown Detroit? In the future I think people are going to avoid racing downtown not because of crime/safety issues but because there is a good chance the race is going to go off course!
Every year something big seems to go wrong. For the lead 1/2 marathoners it was a guess as to which way to go after you broke off from the marathoners. Very confusing the same as last year. Mile markers were way off. 1 and 2 were on. Mile 3 was short mile 4 never existed and 6-8 way off. 9-12 seemed to be accurate. Trying to get around all of the 5kers who were walking down the tunnel 5 abreast blocking the way was a real joy for the 1/2 marathon lead runners. I vow to never run the 1/2 again.

Just because there hasn't been before, does that mean that there couldn't have been this year? There are plenty of women this year trying to get the Trials qualifier at 2:47 and plenty that are capable of 2:40-2:42 but it would require a good day and it was far from good at Detroit today.
take it easy there skippy...doug does a fine job...detroit's finest aren't always the easiest to work with...last year i witnessed the mess during the 1/2 marathon...the police refused to direct people the right way even when race officials arrived and told them where the course was supposed to go...

I am going to have to back Vern. What american woman has run any race within the last couple years that would indicate that a 2:40 was anything other than a pipe dream? Chicago, Twin Cities and New York stole all the americans.

I liked this race but, yeah, the mile markers were nuts. Mile markers 1, 2 and 3 were there, but there was no 4, 5 was long, 6 was a half mile (I ran it in around 3 minutes), 7 was probably a little short, 8 seemed fine, 9 wasn't there, 10 was fine, 11 wasn't there, 12 was fine.
