Looking at this makes you believe that BYU could be a legitimate podium contender next year and the year after.

The results look pretty good but you'd like to see their fastest guys dip under 5/mile no matter what the distance. I'm thinking BYU can be good but until their golden missionaries (Golden and Rohatinsky) come back and get in shape I don't know if they'll be a championship threat. And I don't know if Kip will still be there waiting for the missionaries.
Harper
Roahtinsky
Goodwin (footlocker 5th?)
Bybee (Top 10 HS miler)
All get back from their missions next year. Give them one year to get back into shape and add them to the group of sophs. on this years team and you are looking at a podium team.
In terms of the 5 minute miles. The course is long grass, and run at altitude, so that needs to be considered. Though they do look alot stronger than the 12th place at NCAA team from last year.
Where does this Kenyan dude belong on our All-American predictions? Top 20? Better? What are his creds?
I was there in person at the race. It had rained in Provo quite a bit on friday and saturday (the day of the race.) So it was run at altitude, in long grass, on a soggy course.
BTW, Kip ran 3:42 for 1500m last year.

BYU was beaten by Weber State. Give Weber credit for winnning. However, I came away believing the BYU has the better team. I do not mean to take anything away from Weber they ran well, they have a good team and they won the meet.
Here are my reasons: 1) The meet was won by Kangogo he won by quite a ways and he looked awesome. In meets like Griak, prenats, mountain region and nationals he will score significantly lower than Weber's #1.
2) BYU showed great depth and has a large number of runners with a very small split. 2-5 places only had a 14 second split. Weber also had a very tight spil but only with their top five. If one does not sustain or has a bad race It would be bad for Weber to have to rely on their sixth runner.
BYU is a top ten team this year. Weber could be a top 10 and IS a top 20 team.
I was also at the race, and I have to disagree that BYU is the better team. Many of the BYU runners are milers, yet they were outkicked by the Weber States distance runners. As I saw the race BYU went out hard and couldn't hold their position late in the race. Weber started out conservative and moved up the entire race. In an 8k and a 10k the Weber pack will beat the BYU pack by a much larger margin. BYU over rated, Weber under rated. Also, considering how well Colorado State, and New Mexico ran this weekend BYU could easily finish third in the conference. CSU has a tight pack, and has been a strong top 20 team the last couple of years. UNM has four guys that could compete for the conference individual title, two of whom qualified for nationals last year.
To give BYU credit, I was very impressed with Kangogo. He was in control the entire race. All-American Teren Jameson had trouble trying to run with him. I could easily see this guy finish in the top 10 at Nationals.
FYI - Teren is coming off of easy base work and ran as a workout. He is not in the same shape as last year at this time so he is not a good indicator for your comparison. Although, I agree that the BYU Kenyan is legit and BYU is tough. So is Weber and the whole region. Maybe I should go foreign??????
I agree the Weber is a legitimate team.
But don't tell me that weber's distance runners outkicked BYU milers. I believe that both Atwater and Tolman are sub-4 milers. And it was Tolman that outkicked BYU runners not one of Weber's distance runners.
The team that seemed to run the best in the latter part of the race WAS.......Utah. I expect that Utah is a legitimate top 30 team this year.
Weber beat BYU. Weber won last weekend.
Don't count on it happening again. even though Weber is very good.
I was there too.
Kangogo won by 26 seconds! He was not even pushed--26 seconds is a looonnnggg way in a 4 mile race.
He will get his first test at Griak.
My bad--23 seconds--26 ahead of next collegian. Still a long way.
IHMO, too early to tell whether BYU or Weber will be better. A 1 point victory this early in the season doesn't say a lot--its good for braggin' rights at the moment though.
I wasn't there so what do I know but. . . . how could Utah be a top 30 team when they got perfect scored by both BYU and Weber St? I realize that some of Utah's guys didn't run too well so maybe someone who was at the meet could give more insight into this team's performance.
I met Kangogo when he lived in Alberta this past winter... Very tiny, but fast...
He ran some indoor 1500's in the low 3:50's and some 3k's in the 8:30's, completely unpushed...
he will run some great races this year, I would bet him to place top 10 at NCAA's xc and top 5 in the 5k track
Utahwas perfect scored by both Weber and BYU. That is true. The reason that I am willing to put them in the top 30 teams in the nation is based on 1) they had a very small split. 2) they improved tremendously last year during the season. 3) they lost to Minn. by 2 points and most people seem to believe that Minn, who lost no one from last years team is a top 30 team.
I have an opinion, time will tell if I look the fool or the guru.
Time is telling.
BYU beat once again by weber state
Utah looked okay at Griak, still too far back to make it in the mountain region, they will need to run better
Both byu and weber need to step it up a little to be top ten at NCAAs
BYU should have beat Weber at Griak (with a 1, 11 start) compared to WEBER's first man at 22nd
I do believe one of your reasons for BYU beating Weber would be depth. Cook went from #6 at the BYU meet to #1 at Griak. 16 seconds for 6 men.
Kip beat Boez, so I think that is pretty darn good for credentials. I would say top 5 at Nationals.
Okay if BYU placed fourth at Griak, a meet where 4 of the top 5 teams in the nation were absent, what makes you think they could place top five at nationals? Nice strecth of the imagination. But I do believe they could possibly finish in the top 10.
How does that foot taste in your mouth?
Okay, so Weber won again, barely. But honestly, I don't think they can keep winning. At nationals Kangogo will finish so far ahead of Weber's top guy that they won't be able to make up the difference. They may be able to put their 3-5 guys ahead of ours, but it won't be enough. But they definitely are a good team, better than I thought, and I must admit I was wrong about their depth, they had a good showing through six. But they won't beat us at nationals, the only race that counts. In smaller races they have a chance though and they've shown that.
