She looked a lot healthier as well. Her 10000m PR is a little under 31:00 so I don’t know about her closing the gap with the Africans.

She ran well today but hard to overlook what she did in Paris as a fan of the sport.

I don’t want to overreact to one race, but given the two marathons she’s finished, smashing the American record here and beating Sisson on a fast, flat course, she seems to be America’s best female marathoner at the moment.

It'll be interesting to see what Weini and Roe do once they move up but right it seems to be her crown to lose.

Actually anyone with a decently sophisticated understanding of the sport would know it was HER spot and that contractually it makes total sense she would start that race.
But as a weekend warrior I’m sure you don’t have any knowledge about that.

Hard to overlook what? That she competed in a spot she rightfully earned?

If it were an event where 4th place qualifier had a solid chance at a medal, sure. But in the marathon? GTFO. She earned it.

She didn't show fear. I saw her at half mark and she was zoned in.

She had a solid career at Stanford.

When healthy

Excluding today, Fiona would have won every New York Marathon since 1971 except for four.

In those four she would have been 1, 10, 11, and 18 seconds behind the winner.

She beat Shalane Flangan's 2017 winning time by more than four minutes.

She beat Molly Seidel's previous American best set in 2021 by 1:53.

Throwing up cost her a whole minute? Did she stop to throw up or something?

I want to second that she looked SO MUCH HEALTHIER than she has in recent years. I really hope she can stay healthy now and keep crushing. Hard to watch someone succeed when they look physically sick. Glad she doesn’t anymore.

I thought the story ended up that she would have had to withdraw like two days before the race. And it was something that could plausibly just feel better with some rest.

Boo hoo. Cry me a river. You want some cheese with that wine? If you want to run in the Olympics, get top 3 at the trials.

Were you watching and are you a runner? They had a split screen showing Fiona at about mile 22, it looked like she was spitting but a hell of a lot more came out her mouth, and the broadcast said something about gastric issues. So yeah 20 sec a mile the last 3, gutting it out + the post finish line blow is how I got 1 minute...give or take...

She was an absolute baller yesterday, refusing to be dropped, clawing back to the pack when the Kenyans were clearly working together. She showed so much grit and determination, it was so fun to watch. I also was sad to have one less American to root for in the Olympics when she dropped after limping a mile but understand there’s financial consequences and wish contracts were structured differently. I hope she stays healthy and gets much deserved confidence from this race. Kudos to her!
