Galen Rupp- 1:02:42 Philly Half

It is a great result for the old man. To be able to run his peak marathon pace for a half marathon at age 39 is tremendous.

Talent doesn’t go away

62:40 ... much better than his 20k a few weeks ago.

If Rupp is still 3 minutes from PR in HM, he could challenge some of Lagat's m40 world records next year. 27:49 in particular. Probably can't beat a 3:54 mile anymore

I don't think we'll ever see Rupp take an honest crack at a track race again. Portland track fest during training is probably as good as it'll get.

Besides comparing this result from Rupp to his former self, how do these results stack up against the guys he raced? Anyone see the race unfold?

Should be in the top tier (10) of USA finishers. He's got a lot of miles in those legs so to get back in to good shape at this point is a good achievement. Sub 2:10 would be overachieving.

13:06 and 3:54 are definitely out of reach, but Lagat left the 3000, and 10000 and up unfinished when he walked away

That's a very solid result for him. I was at the race. It was a little warm/humid and he ran a lot of it solo. Mostly flat course but a few bumps. Pretty promising for still getting back into racing and being in a marathon block. I wouldn't have been shocked if he ran in the 64s.

39, Really? Golly gosh, I can remember like yesterday going to the South Eugene HS track mid-day for a workout. Salazar and Rupp were the only ones there. Rupp was still in HS and just finishing a workout. I asked Alberto what's happenin'? He said Rupp just ran a 2 mile time trial in the 8:40s. Boy, do I feel old.

Galen cannot do the speed work necessary to run 27:49 or 3:54. It just won’t happen for him.

Still think he goes 2:10 in a last hoorah at Chicago. Go out respectably

Isn't this pretty good for this course based on how he has ran it before? didn't he run like 1:02:20 in 2017? Or is the course different?

Rupp ran 1:02:18 in 2017 before winning Chicago three weeks later.

It looks like the course is different. As I recall, the old course started near the Art Museum, went into Center City and then did a loop of the River Drives before finishing near the Art Museum. The new course avoids the Center City part and is instead a long out and back using both of the River Drives.

This particular course is almost dead flat, about 170ft of total elevation. But a bit of a warm day, nothing crazy hot though. So put me in the camp of a really good performance from Rupp.

With supe shoes he might be able to get close to the 27:49 mark. Mile record and 5k impossible for sure. I really believe that we need to separate the records and start calling them super shoe era. Is not fair.

hopefully he can break 2:10 at chicago. I'm just glad to hear that he's back racing healthily and pretty fast times for such a long break
