Most overrated musician of all time?

Just because the Beatles write songs about Yellow Submarines and raccoons doesn't mean they aren't artistic. The Beatles can do one thing that your heroes could never do: write a catchy song. I guarantee that 95% of America couldn't name a single Coltrane song. If he's better than the Beatles how can this be the case? And don't tell me "oh he wasn't marketed" because he was, he and your bossanova boys just couldn't write a song with a hook decent enough to be remembered. Shit even Duke Ellington and the greats from those days had catchy songs, and you can't tell me those guys had no artistic ability.

The key word here might be *songs*. Coltraine wrote music without words. Words are what people remember. You're right about the 95% thing, but 95% probably couldn't name an instumental from a Beatles' album either, and there were a few.

or "Ain't going down 'til the sun comes up" or "Friends

in low places" or "If tomorrow never comes" or "Unanswered prayers" .... such bad, bad music.....only a few hundred million of us agree on that ....

If Chuck Norris played the guitar, he'd slowly build up his rep until it eventually became so big that it would have to be proclaimed "overrated." Then he'd roundhouse kick you in the face!

A zillion people bought into Garth Brooks, all over the World, for their own various reasons about they wanted music to be to them.... And you are basically saying they are all wrong !!!! Ah yes, the old "you think you're all-knowing" response when someone doesn't like the same stuff as you. Take a deep breath, and find some of that "chilling" music you wrote about. You can really, really use some. Or maybe your exclamation point and question mark keys got stuck.

You said it yourself: what is good music is subjective. That means even if there really were a couple hundred million who liked Garth - or if everyone else on the planet liked Garth, I can still say his music is crappy. It's...wait for it...subjective!

To "The Thinker", I first of all do not think Maynard or Tool could be considered overrated because there are an incredible amount of people who have never even heard them. Also, I would have to say that Tool is a unique and talented band. Also, I don't agree that Pink Floyd, Zeppelin, or Clapton are overrated. I have been playing guitar for years, so I have at least a basic apprecitaion of music, and I think Gilmour, Page, and Clapton are all excellent guitarists. In my opinion, Page may be the best of all time. I know some people will metion some obscure guitarist from Sweden or something as the best of all time in an attempt to sound like they know what they are talking about, but just because a guy like Yngwie Malmsteen can play crazy solos for 3 hours straight doesn't make it good.

Therefore, I do not fit at all into the "who can like Garth Brooks music" insults you included in a couple of posts. My point is not whether or not you like some of

Garth's music, it's that you seem to need to throw out a bunch of crap about anyone who does. If you're doing it in

fun, then I admit I missed the joke.

As for the counting, check out all-time record sales, and

biggest concerts in the World when Garth was touring, and

you will find several hundred million Garth fans.

I don't think Garth is a great singer or songwriter or instrumentalist. I do think he was a great entertainer,

and I enjoy listening to many of his songs, not all.

To me, that's all I need in my musical choices - no

politics required, no coolness necessary, no critical

analysis, no genre specific --- just stuff I enjoy listening to. Is that bad?

Maybe whoever mentioned Joao Gilberto as a woman was thinking of his wife Astrud of The Girl from Iapenema fame. Either way both were talented and underrated musicians.

I have to disagree with the Dead bashing. In concert in the early 70's the dead were a completely different world from their studio recordings. Jerry himself was far better than the Dead as a whole, he was possibly a better bluegrass/gospel/country musician than a rock musician, listen to his work with David Grisman or Old in the Way for proof. For the rest of the band, Phil Lesh is a terrible bassist, Weir wasn't so hot either, but Robert Hunter is an amazing lyricist teamed with Jerry.

im an old shit at 50. i loved the dead although im now more of a stones freak. my wife is a ledhead. first son, perhaps a bit misguided, loves dave matthews. second son, with a wonderful eclectic intuitive sense of music, listens to miles, coltraine, shins, ween, even parliament. whatever rocks your boat. this thread is a little too mean spirited for something so personal and subjective.
