Hello everyone. I'm a 3200m runner hoping to improve my speed at lower distances to build a good base to run fast in my main event. I'm hoping to get as close as 9:30 as I can this season. Early season already did 6x1k averaging 4:53 pace and with some magic luck/tapering I felt my goals were possible. I've always been much more aerobically strong than leg strength so my kick and speed endurance are weak, so I tried to work on that throughout this season.
The season has been flying by and with how I originally hoped to be a lot faster now by my 800m test season opener in 2:05 (felt relatively easy for a race and recovered quick after, ran 63-62 leading entire race until someone kicked final 100m) and a nice 9:53 3200m a few weeks later (through 6 laps in a tactical clumped up 7:31, but I decided to pick it up and drive a fast final 800m and only passed by 2 in the final lap to secure 3rd.
I felt confident in my abilities coming into the later season to run at least low 4:30s in the mile. As you can see, it hasn't happened 🫤
I soloed a 4:37 mile by opening in about 2:16 for 800 and closing the best I could without competition at a home league meet, and felt pretty good about myself, but every 800m attempt since to try to PR since 63-62 felt like really easy improvement splits, I've went out in 59, 61, tried all kinds of stuff, and haven't broken 2:06 again.
And just a few days ago I made a mile attempt and once again 4:38. Granted, this time I was running on a track with annoying divots and shaped in a triangular way (the curves were not steeper than a regular track it was just 3 of them), so it could've been that, but I crossed the line every single time (my 4:37 solo too) not feeling awful in my lungs but with tired-out legs. Thinking back on memories during the race, each time there were moments where I could totally imagine myself throwing in a surge and picking it up, but each time somehow to the best of my efforts it didn't happen. I would just keep striding and putting in more effort but not doing the explosive speed I imagined.
To be honest, it's entirely possible 2:05 is just my 800 limit since my 400m speed max is around a 56, but my mile has been really disappointing. Maybe it's just because I haven't particularly tapered for any race yet and just thrown myself in off of 2 regular days of running, but I just feel like I've hit a wall.
So alllll that to say, does anyone have any suggestions for what I should be doing in terms of workouts or treating races? My final mile is next week, Thursday, before I start championship season and only racing 3200m. What are some peaking workouts I can do to build leg sharpness/speed? I think the idea is long recovery but fast, so what are some workouts? And for sharpening up for 3200m I'm mostly just thinking stuff like 6x800. Is there anything else?
Thanks everyone. - SadHighSchoolDistanceRunner
