Dude I'm the first person to say I despise Matt Choi and his ilk, and I tend to think the atmosphere around a major race should be even more law-abiding than usual. Gotta keep things safe and orderly for racers, volunteers, spectators, and bystanders.
But this ultra-American mindset that sees any alcohol in a public setting as super verboten and dangerous and pearl-clutch-inducing is really annoying, and I sorta think you need to zoom out and take a look at how worked up you are about someone drinking A BEER in public (which wouldn't even draw comment in literally any other part of the world, btw, except the puritanical US).
Next time you're driving somewhere and you break the speed limit by 5mph, I expect you to find the nearest police station and turn yourself in. Far, FAR more dangerous than cracking a cold one mid-marathon, and like you said, THE LAW IS THE LAW.
Drinking in public low key with friends is one thing, but glorifying irresponsible behavior at an event where others invest a great deal of time, money, and energy is selfish and stupid.
Letsrun posters mad because a YouTuber can stop for fans and drink beer during a marathon and still run faster than them
He was really really slow though.
But in the context of his training (or lack thereof), and the beers and other substances he consumed during the race, it wasn't really too bad of an outing.
Having shared a corral in Houston, I know firsthand how disruptive his documentation style can be. His Boston approach seemed far less impactful to other runners than prior races, which I'll take as a win in the influencer age.
Best I can tell from social media, he filmed using a cell phone rather than an on-course bike videographer. For his eating and drinking exploits, he appears to be on the road's shoulder in most videos.
I heard they get comp'd hotel rooms etc. and hotel staff have to basically swallow their loads n shi.t.
What an embarrassment to the sport. But I suppose talented pro athletes do the same and our sport is too dumb to monetize properly this is the carp we have to deal with.
It's better to look cool and above average in whatever you do then be anything other than top 10 and a try hard. In some cases you don't even have to be above average.
Team Choi in full damage control mode the past 48 hours. Posting videos of Matt taking pictures for wheelchair competitors, getting some dude to comment on the guy that flipped him off a few weeks ago being wrongheaded, lots of Matt fans coming to his rescue in the comments, etc.
This seems like a lot of work for a guy that's just putting out good vibes and doesn't think that he has done anything wrong.
This guy clearly stopped to drink beer and made sure that everyone knew it because he’s afraid of embarrassing himself and needed an excuse… confirmed by how he made sure everybody knew he only ran 6 miles in the 5 weeks leading up to the races. It’s like showing up to the start line wearing a cast on your foot. I doubt he could have run more than 2 minutes faster without the beer and other nonsense. Kinda cowardly if you ask me.
