Stuff like this happens all the time in D3, and it sometimes happens in D1 too. Abdi Nur went from 15:30 in high school to 13:06 in college. If you want to go by 2 years, almost 2 years to the day he was 33rd at NCAAs. Arguably a more impressive jump (even though he was better in high school).
A lower profile one would be Christopher Alfond of UMass Lowell, who went from 16:11 in high school to 7:55 and 13:48 in college. Took him a bit longer though, I think he was there for an extra year or two thanks to COVID.
It used to be a lot more common, a lot more teams used to take a chance on a local walk-on who had never trained with 4:40/10:00ish PRs and see what happened. With the internet and accessibility of times for recruiting, it's simply not worth it when the same college could instead take a chance on a 4:25/9:30s guy that they wouldn't have even heard of before the internet.
But good for Tyler, hopefully he goes on to a long, successful career and inspires a few more 4:40 high schoolers to take a shot.
It's sad that this doesn't really happens much anymore. I was a high 4:30 guy in high school with like a 2:05 800. I ended up running in college and got down to 1:52 and 4:10. I wish coaches would take more chances on people, most of the guys in my class that were running 4:20s in high school never really improved or ended up running like 4:18. There are so many factors that go into running fast as a high schooler and a lot of them are out of the runners control (puberty for example) I bet there are a lot of high school 4:30-40 guys that wouldve been great college runners if they were given the chance but had to stop in high school because of the lack of opportunities for them.
I currently run for Wartburg. Very curious what shady substances are being used here? Apparently it's no secret so you can tell me. I'm assuming the same substances are being used at Wisconsin La Crosse and North Central. Obviously, the only way for D3 runners to get good is to cheat.
Post the kids high school training. Pretty much all these case are kids that basically didn’t train in HS.
He went to Ankeny Centennial in high school, which has produced some state champ caliber kids. IDK training specifics, but he certainly wasn't on the 10 mpw training plan.
Oh there are tons of variations. The I play football and basketball and only do spring track. i ran those times sophmore year and sick/ injured jr/sr. I only went out for track senior year. And so on. The odds of this kid running 50mpw and doing tack for 4 years and then progressing to running a 5k 10s/mile faster than his mile time is a stretch. Feel free to post some details
Ah yes, Letsrun, where you can say "I like pancakes" and somebody will respond "So you hate waffles?"
That’s an odd response. Do you believe that Nur’s tremendous improvement means it’s possible for other HS 15:30 runners to become world class?
Yes, this is literally how logic works. You're suggesting something that HAS happened cannot happen, essentially because... It has happened?
Nur's improvements SPECIFICALLY mean it's possible for someone to improve that much. It does NOT mean that EVERYONE can improve that much, but SOMEONE could improve that much.
As tylers roomate I can confirm that he is sacrificing baby goats and practicing inhumane rituals at night. We also swap retainers and hold hands to help fall asleep. It is no mistake how he has dropped that much time after breaking his leg last year. He was so slow in high school because his school colors were black and grey. Roll Jags. I bet Coach Chapman has him drinking juiced substances. I heard a rumor of some in the category of celery. I can tell this is just the tip of the iceberg for Scherm. I bought stock a long time ago which has made me a wealthy man, however I just triple-downed on my investment. I advise others to do the same or watch out. To the moon.
I heard that fellow teammate and Tama Project Elite Founder Jonathan Meyer has made profound leaps in Buddy Rollout which has benefited Schermerhorn and should be credited for the current success and what is ahead for Tyler.
When a d3 runner does this the kids who used to beat him in high school that went to d1 schools get butt hurt. "How could he possibly be better than me" they might ask? To put it simply Tyler decided there was more to his career then peaking in high school and using pay to win opportunities like xlr8. Perhaps instead of the cool picture you got for your unofficial visit you could have gone elsewhere and gotten better instead of hurt.
As one of tylers roommates, best friends, massage partners, and lifelong friends I know the secret. He has battled something plaguing almost 12 million men in America. Tyler has been fighting erectile dysfunction for most of his running career. I think this could be what has given him the edge over the competition and allowed him to push even further. This is a war i have counseled him over the past 7 years of knowing him. He has been embarrassed about his penis since, "The Great Urinal Tragedy of 2017" in which he found out that not all penises are neapolitan. This shocking discovery for him struck him to his core. He claims that he was never concerned about the chocolate shaft vanilla sack and pink tip, but after that day he was never the same. What changed from high school to college has to be his relationship with his penis and coming to terms with it. Also he trains with a Creighton runner over the summer so that might be something to look into.

Lol, you gonna pretend like everyone doesn't know about the drug cabinet in your locker room? Or the bag of unlabeled black pills Chapman supplies every athlete? Just so you're aware, Chapman has applied to Augustana, Calvin, North Central, Platteville, all in the past few years. He has no interest in being at Wartburg and doesn't care about you guys, sorry to say. I'm sure he's got atleast one interview to a different school soon, and every coach in D3 has heard him say he wants to get out of Waverly so badly. Not your fault tho, keep doing you
You can make big time progress in 24 months when you 1) get in the right training environment 2) get consistent training in that environment 3) mature beyond high school physically 4) have the right mindset. Graham Blanks ran, what, 13:30 something 12 months after graduating during his gap year? It happens.
How is Graham Blanks the standard, bro is obviously also sauced...

I also have no interest in being at Wartburg so when he leaves and takes over the program at MoreHead state, I will be more than happy to jump ship and become a member of that prestigious program. It will also be great to actually be worth something when I become a d1 runner
