...on that 3rd leg at the Tom Jones Memorial Invite.
It was a very interesting match up. On the face of it, Miller-Uibo was the most impressive, running a 49.6 leg compared to Steiner's 50.6 (and Holmes was slower). Miller-Uibo took the baton 5-6 meters behind Steiner, who was a couple of meters behind Holmes, and come the end of their leg, Miller-Uibo and Steiner had passed Holmes, effectively exchanging at the same time (...then Steiner botched her exchange with the outgoing runner).
Some points:
Holmes had run the open 400m at the meeting (presumably before the relay?) so would not have been as fresh
Steiner had also run the 100m at the meet (again, presumably earlier?) so Miller Uibo was the most fresh.
A 49.6 leg from Miller-Uibo suggests she is in sub 50.5 form in the open. She ran a 51.8 last August as her best race post pregnancy (just 4 months post pregnancy) so she is certainly on the right trajectory. (note she ran 49.91 at the Tom Jones meet in 2022 in April and a 49.08 toward the end of April in 2021. So she isn't on track with her recent best seasons, but this will be her first winter training since pregnancy. )
An 11.05 & 50.6 relay leg from Steiner suggests her speed is comparable to this point in her 2022 season, (she ran 11.10/ 10.92 & a 50.55 relay leg in April '22.....before that 48.78 in May that same year).
Holmes went straight from the World Indoors to competing outdoors with no rest. Presumably she will take a break at some point before the Olympic Trials, or else she faces the danger of her 2022 season and being flat come the Nationals. (she was far less raced in 2023)
With Paulino's enigmatic post on 'trying something different' (the 800m? A change of allegiance to Haiti? A change of coach?) I'm still hoping she runs the 400m or else we lose a huge contender. From a US perspective, already things are hotting up. The women's 400m flat could be one of THE sprint events in Paris.
