How can I be a faster distance runner?

    Hi, I'm a high school distance runner and I've been running for a while and putting in more work and miles than my teammates, but I literally cannot get faster for the life of me. I came into last indoor with a 5:32 pr from last year outdoor, and finished the season with 5:33. My outdoor opener was 5:31, and I've pretty much given up on this season and am focusing on next year (junior year). I have legitimately no idea what I'm doing wrong - I do core and strength train weekly, do 40 miles per week, always show up to workouts, and I hate that my teammates don't have to do this to beat me. What can I do over the summer to fix this?

    Any help???

    I've been in your situation. I couldn't break 6 minutes in the 1600 in 8th grade and didn't break 5 until the last race of my junior year. My senior year I figured things out and ran 4:30. The answer? You're leaving your races in your easy days. Unless you are doing a track workout, JOG AS SLOW AS YOU CAN. Try it for one week and keep going ham in your real workouts. Do this the rest of your season.

    Then this summer, push your easy days like you have been but don't do any workouts right away and just focus on volume. Then, once you start workouts again, just try to be chill on your easy days, you don't have to jog, but keep easy days easy and hard days moderate to hard.
