no knowledge or belief before the internet... especially in events longer than 800m.
shoes have nothing to do with it!
I have a feeling modern kids didn’t know things like books existed where guys like Lydiard explained why you ran 100mpw. Or bowerman. Or any of the other dozen I read.
That being said the importance of things like short sprints wasn’t really mentioned. Or some drills. Not hugee things by any means but when talking those last half dozen seconds..
Maybe you read those books pre-internet, but I don't remember me or anyone on my team doing so. I don't think my coach did. I doubt the coaches and runners in my state did when you could be competitive with a 2:00 800, 4:30 1600, and 10:00 3200.
I mean, this is just anecdote but we sure were doing something wrong in the 90's. And I sure did get better from 2000-2010 once I learned. Lucky you.

So none of the coaches or runners in your state read a book about running/training?
lol...
The reason HS & college runners have been running so much faster in the last couple of years is not the internet... be serious.
"No, there is no "proof", as you say. But you can't prove kids at your local gym will be using drugs either. But they will be."
This is a deflection, as we are not discussing what local kids do at local gyms. We are talking about highly visible runners from across the country, whom some of you think are all in some kind of doping though you have absolutely no evidence. No one can name one current top HS Name one runner from Arcadia who you even think was doping. You willing to do that? runner who has been found to dope. To say "you can't rule it out" is inane. The burden of proof is not on me as I am not the one making the claim that people are doping. If you make the claim you should be able to back it up. No one can. Name one runner from Arcadia that you think was doping. Go on, do it. Of course, if you are wrong, you could be open to a lawsuit, but go ahead and back up your comments. You can believe what you want, of course, but you cannot make that claim without risk, which is why everyone speaks in generalities.
No, I won't be liable to a lawsuit for anything I say on this site. No one has ever been sued here for making doping accusations. I don't know who is doping in Arcadia but neither do you. My point, which has been echoed by others here, is that doping is just as much likely to be a factor in recent improvements as any other explanation, as drugs are known to be in school sports. I am not interested in proving which individual runners are doping, I am saying that probability suggests doping continues to play a part in this sport and including at this level. My point about doping in gyms is that we can't prove who is doping but it is known for a fact to be present. So it will be in sports in which athletes strive for success.
