He definitely needs more racing experience, be that from NCAAs or by going on the circuit in Europe this year, I'm not sure. He's still only 17 so he can go to the US next year if he chooses. Not sure what happens to his Nike contract though - I guess it could be changed to NIL?
Thanks I didn't realise that. Hopefully it's a clause only used in the rare case the Nationals field is weak. Jess Hull post-race mentioned not racing the 5k "if everything is finalised tonight"...so it sounded like some of the winners will be getting selected asap?
The Australian selection policies can be at best complicated and at worst mystifying. I know it's unpopular in some circles by I think a trials with qualifier is fairer.
Jess is unique in the sense that she has multiple repeat performances (including 4th at World Indoors), and is clearly head and shoulders above the other Australians in her event currently. If Linden had finished second I think they both would have been pre-selected, but now will likely just be Jess.
So yes - some of the team will be named after this meet, but there are no guarantees in the way the old system alluded to (suspect this is following the selection controversies with Bideau etc.). This is to give them wiggle room in situations like this - where a pre-meet favourite (Stewey) fails to podium.

As an aside - some of the decisions will now become even more interesting. Georgia clearly coming into form, but isn't ranked in the Road to Paris 1500. Abbey has moved to the 800 for these champs, there's depth there and no guarantees that she comes top 3 (Catriona, Benedere, Claudia could all mix it up).
With Jess saying she's only focusing on the 1500, that also opens up space in the 5000, and is probably music to Izzy Batt-Doyles ears as she was likely on the outside looking in for both 5k and marathon.
People like Nic Bideau love the more ambiguous selection processes as his athletes don't need to bother with nationals and can focus on making cash in Europe.

Great race. Myers tripped up a bunch and will learn from that. Ollie was boxed in on the back straight and will be kicking himself he didn't get out earlier because Stewy was always going to get swarmed.
I'm a big Stewy fan but he just can't win championships like this--- MTC strength-based training not working for him anymore?
Selection is going to be hard. Ollie can run fast and kick, so a medal chance. Spencer is auto.
Jessie Hunt could make a case if he gets his PB down to say 3.31/2?
Per AA Policy re: Phase 1 nominations:
"Athlete must have finished in the top two (2) Australian places at the 2024 Australian Track and Field Championships in their event but are not compelled to nominate both first and second placegetters. For the avoidance of doubt, international athletes competing at the 2024 Australian Track and Field Championships will not be considered for the purposes of ranking athletes in each event under this clause"
So there are no autos anymore - you just may be considered.
