Hi All,
I noticed there are quite some experiences runners here and I already benefited from a lot of great info from other posts in the past. I thought I'd try to ask for some specific advice, which would be greatly appreciated!
I'm a marathon runner since 2019, running 2-3 marathons a year. In 2020, I ran my first sub 3 marathon. My current personal best for the marathon is 2:44. So that's an improvement of 16 min in 4 years, which I am quite happy with!
However, my PB's on shorter distances are not in line with my marathon time:
5k = 17 min 30 sec
10k = 36 min
Half marathon = 1 h 19 min (not 100% all out, but I doubt I would be able to run sub 1h18)
I don't bother much, as my focus is on the marathon, but I am wondering if it is recommended working on my speed to further improve my marathon time.
Some more background:
I basically have used the same sub 3 hours training plan for all my marathons: the Mission Marathon Training Plan Sub 3 hours on Runnersworld dot com (sorry, I can't post the link)
So based on time, the training plans were identical. Of course, the faster I get, the more mileage I ran. However, this didn't change drastically over the years (probably 10-15 km extra in peak weak compared to the first time I followed this plan in 2020)
For my latest marathon I averaged almost 90k/week, with a peak of 105k.
Apparently, these aren't really high mileages compared to some others, but for me that's quite decent. Besides, I find the training plan to be quite demanding, with a 3 hour long run including 4 x 20 min blocks at goal marathon pace (see week 12). Given a 3:53 min/km marathon pace, that results in a full marathon during this training session.
This training plan is including quite some block on goal marathon pace, which I believe is crucial. The strange (?) thing is, when I try running the blocks on marathon goal pace, my heart rate is going in red, and most of the training days I can't even maintain if for the full block.
So even if I proved to be able to run a 2:44 marathon, I can most often hardly maintain that pace for 20 min on training. So I have two options for the trainings:
- stick to goal marathon pace as much as possible to get used to the pace (but resulting in a heart rate too high); or
- stick to "goal marathon heart rate" (but resulting in a lower pace than goal marathon pace, usually 5 sec/km)
My next marathon is planned in September and I would really like to break the 2:40 barrier.
I still need to recover from my last marathon for some time, but still I could make a 24 weeks plan.
What do you think is best for me to focus on in the first training blocks?
Building on base: slow runs, maybe cross training, avoiding (lot of) speed work?
Or given my "slower" times on 5k to HM, rather work on speed?
Or maybe focus on strength for some weeks, e.g. hilly runs, mountain trails, ...?
Do you think I should still follow the training plan in the link for the last 16 weeks or do you believe another approach would give me better chances to succeed a sub 2:40 marathon?
Thanks a lot for your advice! Very looking forward to it.
