Is this something many are doing in college or elite HS running?
Even if it is worth some measurable time savings, spending that much for the race time supplement seems weird.

Don’t waste your money on marketing hype sugar water
I am not advocating for this product, but this is not a "nutritional" gel that's just sugar water. It's an entirely different pre-race method of delivering sodium bicarbonate in a way that minimizes stomach distress and boosts performance.
If you're going to bash it, at least have a good reason.
Can’t speak for the other poster, but I’m not meaning to bash the tech. As a 50+ hobby jogger I’m perfectly at home with buying time to try and break 20 again in a 5k. Cycling and triathlons taught me the wisdom in this.
Just wondering if young people with a serious interest in being competitive do it. You see lots of things being hyped and I wonder actually is being used.
Our athletes use it. So far they haven't had an off race since in about 2 season. Could be placebo, could be a massive aid.
I had one good race with it and one bad one. To me, it seems like it suppresses my lactic acid production a bit, so I don't have as much to use when I'd need it. Probably better if. you're racing 5000+ off very aerobic training
In horse racing in Australia bicarb doping is tested for. If the horse is above a threshold it is dqed and trainer can expect a suspension. That suggests it is probably performance enhancing.
Is it wrong to say I hope the stuff doesn’t work? Supershoe prices, durability and accessibility have much improved. So this would now be the expensive thing to get an edge. Not to mention paying for the trial and error if your stomach can handle it.
Mostly just gives you diarrhea. I’m sure the placebo effect is noticeable in some runners though.
Any chemists out there know if you can effectively make your own version of Maurten's bicarb by using garden variety (read: cheap) baking soda along with food grade methylcellulose like Methocel A4C? Heck, wouldn't even chia seeds hydrated help to buffer the unwanted stomach effects? Looking for the homemade version that's not $18 a serving....
