Was just watching the Women's race back and an Gebreselama finishes I'm looking in the background thinking 'why is that athlete kicking from over 500m out?'. Amusingly Emily Lipari sprinted down the 100m to 'finish' just behind Gebreselama in 29:55, only to look at the pack passing her and realise she still has another lap to go...
If your PR is 31:24 and you've only run 15:13 this year, how are you not more aware of your pace/splits to know you're obviously not breaking 30mins right now.
86s last lap for 31:19
oh ffs another athlete [Edit: Parul Chaudhary - 32:02] does the same as Kelati finishes...
So, when she is asked (!!) about her goals (after the 2-mile indoors), she is supposed to downplay it or lie about her goals? Great, then letsrun can complain that there is not enough "going-for-it" in this sport. She ran 30-low last year and got 5th at worlds, what do you want an elite athlete to set as goals? This is dumb. She did not deliver on the day, but everything about her position going into the Olympics makes perfect sense and is backed by her last season. Alicia and Ritz did not do a media campaign promoting her, they answered specific media questions about their goals. Just....shut up, please.

I was there. The officials screwed up. When Emily Lipari's group of 6 runners had 2 laps to go, an official made a mistake and told them they only had one lap to go. The other 5 runners in that group realized that the official was wrong, but Emily Lipari believed the official, so she started kicking.
Lipari didn't have any teammates, friends, coach, etc. with her to yell to her that she was making a mistake, so she didn't realize the mistake until she crossed the finish line, looked at the clock, and saw that she had run 29:55 and "broken" the American Record. She quickly realized that she still had another lap to go.
That's too bad, because 4 of the other 5 runners in Lipari's group finished in 31:04 - 31:07 (the 5th runner finished in 31:15) so Lipari's time could have been a lot faster than the 31:19 that it ended up being.
On the plus side, even though Lipari really struggled through her last lap, she still managed to get a PR! Good for her!
