I feel like both the vapor and alphaflys don't give me good traction when roads are even a little wet. I also don't feel that I get much benefit from them going up steeper hills. Anyone else have similar thoughts? Better options?

Yes. Me too. I love those shoes but we have some wet/frosty/icy conditions now and then and the Vaporflys are useless on those days.
They don't bother me on hills but they are less helpful whenever you run corners, hills, etc.
Nearly all the high school kids in California are wearing them in XC, too.
Even at and after the water stations in races the lack of grip is noticeable.
You asked for better options: The Puma Deviate Nitro Elite are a supershoe that has much more worthy sole pattern and grip. Lower stack height also have you "driving" in these shoes rather than feeling like a passenger.
