Adams took Coca, Hyde and Robles to Washington. All three were already #1 in their respective events in D2. They also took Dunne-- who attempted a fast 3k and failed to qualify for nationals (whereas both Kelati and the Mines guy hit marks at the RMAC meet that got them in) Maybe racing for a conference championship would have been more motivation than racing D1 guys in Washington??? They also took Begashaw for a 5k attempt. He raced slower than the top four at RMAC...again, maybe competing for a conference title would have meant more than a time trial in Washington.
Colorado. It was founded by some governor/former educator named Adams. Better than most state u names - South, East, North, Western, etc. state university and of course THE.
I applaud the coach for making this decision. A great coach is concerned about creating the best opportunities for their top athletes. The mediocre coach shows more concern for keeping their job and their AD happy by chasing meaningless trophies.
A great coach would have got them to hit qualifying (or record) times BEFORE conference championship weekend like EVERY OTHER COACH.
Even Ramsden of Harvard ran 2 events at Heps, then went to the World Indoor Championship, and is now going to NCAAs.
Let's do a quick exercise in counting (which I heard is a mandatory math class at Adam's State)
Number of people Adam's state qualified in Seattle: 0
Number of people that qualified in the Mile/3k/5k at RMACS: 3
Also the fact that both Coca and Hyde TRANSFERRED to Adams should say something about how well Damon can develop talent.
As an Adams State alum, I can't say I'm a fan of skipping RMAC (indoors or outdoors), but to question Coach Martin's ability to develop talent is asinine. I think 35 years (women) and 30 years (men) of consistent, outstanding results speak otherwise. Oh, Coca transferred from the local JC, where Coach Martin's daughter is the coach. Coca, having grown up in a small town a couple 2-3 hours away, is the quintessential Adams State story.
"Quintessential Adams State story" had me laughing. You guys don't have a reputation or history of cultivating local talent. It's the opposite.
For every local success story, there are 10 high impact, foreign/transfer recruits that carry the program. Damon Martin is definitely a good coach, but he would rather polish diamonds than actually develop a low profile runner. He even set up that Juco feeder program so that he can have his daughter filter through the garbage while he shops for accomplished athletes. Kind of selfish imo.
As long as Adams State follows eligibilty rules (its been proven they do not) there's nothing inherently wrong with building a team using accomplished recruits. Every team has its niche. For Adams, it's Europeans and juco transfers.
Adams State is in Kansas at Indoor Nationals right now, ranked #1 for women and #2 for men. When you are clawing and scratching for that supreme prize - the national team title - conference meets are merely a speedbump. Dang son, Adams State could win both team titles this year? That’s a REALLY big deal.
