It’s a private school so anyone is eligible to go there regardless of where they live. The Mastalirs lived up in El Dorado Hills which is about 30 minutes from the school. Recruiting is probably difficult because of the tuition. Lange is a coach and not an administrator, so he doesn’t get to tell anyone they can’t attend the school.
Than Brian Weaver?
Then how has the Buchanan girls team placed so high at nationals the last few years?
Because they get really talented freshmen every year?
Jesuit absolutely recruits students from area Catholic schools, but I've never heard of them knocking down the door for athletes. More often than not, having a father or brother attend the school (and being Catholic) will help with admissions more than athletic potential. You have to take a test, submit an application, and sit for an interview with a teacher to discuss why you want to go there. No one ever asked me a single question about athletics during my application process and my brother had been a state champion for them.
Back in the day Walt used to "recruit" at the Freshman retreat/orientation where he would make a short statement about joining a great team and getting an opportunity to go to Disneyland/Mt. Sac. He'd also find out who was cut from soccer try-outs and scoop up those kids. The Disneyland trip is usually what sold kids and why we routinely had 80-100 kids on the team during the 1990s.
“I gotta give props to my coach. I put my full faith and trust, and he does the rest.”
Says a lot about the ML King coach. This team definitely has a chance to be #1 in CA for XC. They have the best nonsenior 1600 times. I know that 3200 is a better measure for XC, but many top XC scorers hardly ever run or focus on the 3200
I heard that this is the second year of coach Alfonso Ibarra. I wonder if he’s related to Devin Ibarra that won the mile this morning
How can you say Dana hills when Chase from
jserra coaches half of them. At least the Tim doesn’t live with his mom.
I have 0 respect for coaches who live with their parents.
how can you teach these kids anything if you’ve never left the nest.
Albert Caruana, Crystal Springs Uplands. Toiling away in the D5 small school world, his boys and girls XC teams each won back-to-back titles (2022, 2023). Winning back-to-back titles is impressive enough. Doing it with both the boys and the girls teams? That is just incredible.
JSerra ‘s number one girl is coached by Big Bear TC
This is something I did not know
I'll take this opportunity to say some nice things about my boys' coaches at Oakdale. I'm under the impression that Fowler is the manager and Moreno does more of the coaching.
They've taken the program from pretty much nowhere to 4th, 1st, and 2nd in D3 the past 3 years for boys xc. Also, 5th and 4th overall in state the past 2 years as well as 2nd at RL last year. People that know the story know how and why they heartbreakingly and barely missed out on NXN the past 2 years, but I think everyone is sick of talking about it at this point. In the end, they put the work in and had the talent, but things don't always go as planned.
They're not as keen on track, but Dax Daley was going to be the first in program history to go sub 9 at state last year when he got tripped up with around 200m left. Omar Alsaidi became the first at Arcadia this Saturday with an 8:57. Right now, their PRs from this year and last year are 8:57, 9:08, 9:10, 9:15, 9:26, 9:29, 9:47, and 9:58, so 8 under 10 with 5 more under 10:40.
I don't know where everyone will eventually settle after missions, high school progressions, etc. but there are at least 8 kids with the option of running D1 should they choose.
Also, the girls team has had very good success and has had a handful of college runners recently.
I don't know enough to declare them "the best", but I will say that we wouldn't trade them.
Thanks, coaches! It's been a pleasure watching these boys get faster and faster these past few years.
