I do know where you are from. Every place has those who fail - and you're one of them.
True. Your place had your parents, who failed at raising you.
We have had none of the number of deaths of those countries that failed to implement public health guidelines to the same degree. So I can see why you interpret success as "failure"; it's your only way of coping.
Even as that may be the case, what is actually factually incorrect in this “op-ed?” What did Fauci not actually say that this piece is highlighting? Read the article.
The original analysis was that the virus most likely was not synthesized in a lab, and I believe this is still broadly considered the case. Whether patient zero was infected via a lab leak of a natural viral strain or via some social setting matters, but a lot of reporting, including this outlet, doesn't distinguish between lab-synthetic and lab-natural and they have very different implications.
That is, this "op-ed" isn't so much factually incorrect as it is factually incomplete so as to paint an inaccurate picture.
I don’t believe that is broadly still considered to be the case, but we will never know will we? But a Fauci who ‘strongly’ felt this didn’t come from a lab (go watch all the video footage here) and was encouraged to discard that ‘conspiracy theory’ in favor of the proximal origins paper is now saying the lab leak theory is not only plausible but credible. So, this goes to the issue of his credibility on all of this, not the incomplete facts presented in that article.

America is a very overweight (obese) and sickly population in general, plus not nearly as homogeneous as New Zealand, which is where I presume you are writing from, but it doesn’t matter. This is why socialized medicine would never work in America as in your country. There is no system of incentives and disincentives to change behavior. So the system isn’t set up where supply can come anywhere close to meeting demand.
We also have a massive illegal migration crisis at our southern border, and these people get their medical care covered just by virtue of showing up to a hospital. Ironically, a population who didn’t have vaccine passport requirements and couldn’t possibly practice the six foot distancing rule.
It’s not so cut and dry as you make it. America was always going to have a higher kill rate no matter what we did. So much comorbidity here. People don’t eat correctly or exercise. But it was still obvious who needed to be following ‘the rules’ of mask distance and vax versus those who didn’t.

Here's a review article that provides a plausibly non-political overview of the scientific literature published to date on the origins of Covid-19. It's not conclusive, but the geographic pattern of known early cases is more consistent with the market origin hypothesis.
More than three years have passed since the first case of a new coronavirus infection (SARS-CoV-2) in the city of Wuhan (Hubei, China). The Wuhan Institute of Virology was founded in that city in 1956 and the country’s first...

For the record, if the moderation policy of LetsRun has changed from Wejo's previously stated "one covid vaccine thread", it would be nice if this were clearly stated instead of leaving it to the apparently arbitrary and opaque discretion of individual moderators.

As I argued in 2020, the wet market theory has too many unlikely coincidences and lacks supporting data, whereas the lab leak theory has quite a bit of supporting data and is a far more logical conclusion.
Yet instead of considering the Wuhan lab as a possible cause, leaked emails show Fauci and Collins acted early and aggressively to suppress the Lab leak theory.
The logical question is why? Why wouldn't the two possible origins be considered equally? Or at least consider them equally until the preponderance of evidence pointed to one or the other?
The answer should be clear now that we have learned more.
After gain of function (GOF) research was banned in the US, NIH funded EcoHealth Alliance to do "not-GOF-research-because-we-define-GOF-differently" research at the Wuhan Lab. Fauci and Collins did not want to be linked to breaking the law by using a proxy (EcoHealth) to bypass the law and continue research that would be considered illegal in the US.
That's not to say it's an evil conspiracy. It's just a good old fashioned CYA cover up. To those who haven't followed the story, Fauci used the "I don't recall" defense over 100 times in the recent closed door congressional hearing.

At about 3500 deaths per million, the U.S. is 16th in the world for COVID deaths per million, behind Peru at the top and mostly a passel of Eastern European, former communist countries with deep distrust of government. New Zealand had 1097 COVID deaths per million. Looks to me like New Zealand did what was right for its people and the U.S. people and for the first year, the U.S. gov't, failed deeply.
Daily and weekly updated statistics tracking the number of COVID-19 cases, recovered, and deaths. Historical data with cumulative charts, graphs, and updates.

I know this thread isn’t about vaccines, but I don’t understand Robert Malone. The guy invents mRNA vaccines (Yes, he invented them. Him and Felgner I believe were the first to show that a polynucleotide in a liposome produce an antibody response) and then complains when they’re proven to be an effective platform utilized around the world to save millions of lives. Make it make sense

A team of scientists from the US has recently evaluated the susceptibility of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection in sheep. The findings reveal that sheep are generally less susceptible to S...

Exactly. This is the point I’m making. It goes to the issue of the man’s credibility. You are, in theory, the world’s foremost authority in this field, but you don’t recall? On top of, you made a bunch of sh*t up. Man, that’s compelling.
It’s also entirely plausible that workers at that Wuhan lab unknowingly spread it to the wet market, so it appears it came from there. We’ll never know because there wasn’t a forceful enough effort to ever find out. The point is, it doesn’t matter which way scientists are leaning. We will never have all the facts.

Again, the US is an obese and sickly nation with lots of comorbidity. We are also a nation very deficient in vitamin D, which is necessary for optimal immune functioning. We are not a homogeneous population, and many of our sub-groups are more vulnerable by definition.
We never weren’t going to be at the top in per capita death no matter what we did, but many of those deaths were merely pulled forward by a year or two. That’s not a commentary on the vaccine. If you were in one of those categories, you really had no choice.
Also, again, we have an extremely porous southern border with no political will to stop the massive influx of migrants, who were neither vaccinated nor could comply with the six foot distancing rule. So, how much did that contribute to the spread?
