I'm kind of puzzled because I went to HS in San Diego and all of my league meets, CIF meets, and at least one invitational were at Morley Field. To me, that seems like an slightly above average slope, but very short 1-2 block hill. I now live in North County San Diego and so many road or trail hills are a mile straight uphill.
Do people in the cross country world really consider Morley Field / Upas Street a "monster hill"?

The first time you go up the hill it isn't so bad. It becomes a monster hill the second time you have to go up it.
That's why CIF modified the course to eliminate the second time up the hill. Too many kids couldn't handle it.
The only race that still includes the second time up the hill is Foot Locker.
I'm from SD and always hated running at Morley lol. IMO the Upas street hills aren't the worst part, it's mostly that the entire course is pretty uneven (and slanted) and there's actually a pretty significant hill by the dog park that you have to run up twice, which really kills you the second time you go through it. It's pretty tough to keep a rhythm on it. I found it a lot harder than Mt. Sac in comparison, although a lot of my teammates didn't agree with me.
The fact that it was muddy during the race had me think of the world XC juniors meet that Ritz placed 3rd in if I recall, when conditions were muddy. The Ritzenhein's are good mud runners. It's in her DNA.
Guys, c'mon- Dathan and Kalin (Toedebusch) are her parents. Both ran for Rockford HS back in the early 90s. Same time as when Don Sage ran for York- I remember Don running 8.42 for 3200 and then later that same day Dathan ran 8.41.

Kalin Toedebusch was the Michigan state record holder in the 2M and was 10th and 5th, respectively, at the 1999 and 2000 Footlocker xc championships.

Late 90's you mean...both Ritz and Kalin are class of '01 or '02.

It's like Dathan saw what Rupp and AlSal had going on at NOP, and decided they weren't going far enough. Altitude house? Nah, move to altitude. Coach at a high school and try to find a talented kid? Nah, have a kid with your HS XC sweetheart, and put them in the top program in the country. He even started a pro group to bring the best talent in the country right to his front door.
