I am hoping to break 4:50 in the 1600m and get a low 10 in the 3200m, and I've been testing out both vaporflies and spikes on the track. People say spikes are always better, but I've been getting really contradictory results. Granted, my spikes are super budget, I got the Victory XC 5 because they were on sale, and being an XC spike (with shorter 6mm pins replaced in) on a track might not be the best.
Recently, for a DMR 1200m leg, I ran 1:11-1:12-1:11 in vaporflies on a wet-ish track, meaning if I closed in under 1:14 I would have my sub 4:50. I wasn't feeling too gassed afterwards and I still had some running left in me. I also ran a pretty light 10:36 3200m in vaporflies another week ago.
However, just today, I tried on my spikes for a 3x1600m workout. I was aiming to do reps at 5:20 pace to try to break them in, but I ended up messing up my pace (following faster pace group) and splitting 5:08, 5:24, 5:26.
The spikes felt a bit more tiring than running in vaporflies. I feel like my muscles are developed to run in high stack shoes and vaporflies, but not really spikes yet. I have a couple options now at this point.
Should I race my closely upcoming races in Vaporflies and try to workout in spikes and adjust to them to build the spike muscle strength and race in spikes later?
Should I return my spikes (if anyone has experience that Victory XC 5 is bad for track) and buy a pair of Dragonflies/super spikes to hope I might respond better? (This one feels like a waste to me)
Or should I just start wearing my spikes right away? Honestly, the workout today was paced horribly so that may have led to the fatigue and negative experience I felt. Running 5:08 5:24 5:26 is still pretty good for my caliber especially since I've never officially broke 5 yet...
Thanks in advance, anyone who has experience actually going sub 5 probably has some pretty good advice.
