Precisely. The Duke runner drifted into lane two, putting herself in harms way.
This threas was initially entitled, "Duke literally dropped the baton" but we made it more descriptive.

What if you only have one arm--your right arm, meaning you only have a right hand to carry the baton.
Lots of comments here about which hand the baton should’ve been in. This is all avoided if the runner just turns their wrist counter clockwise a little. Who the heck swings a baton in to lane 2 like it is a sword?
As far as handing off. Receiving runner takes the baton left hand so they can face the inside of the track with an open exchange. It is then typically switched to right hand for the next handoff so you have plenty of room to be inside the next runner. If you then run up on them it is still no problem. Granted this was the last leg, but most runners have the habit of switching to the right even on last leg.
That ACC replay on Sunday didn't include any footage of the Duke coaches throwing a tantrum. Perhaps it was edited. I missed it live while attending a basketball game. The only thing the tape included was brief clip of two Duke assistants having a mostly tame discussion with an official.
It will be interesting in Albuquerque to see if the Duke distance medley runners are holding the baton differently. All except Tolbert were holding near the bottom in Louisville. Maatoug didn't swing it very much but all the others were flailing backwards and outside.
The video substantiates the crazy sword swinging of the baton, but not that the Duke runner was "100% at fault." This was not a situation of the Duke runner attempting to impede the Miami runner or running a whacky line at all, looked like a plain old frantic race to the finish to me.

The Duke runner did drift out as most do instictivly to "block" the runner attempting to pass. If they had not, the same thing might have happened, but it would have been Miami's hand in lane 1 and not vice versa so possible grounds for an appeal.

You're missing a bigger "what if." What if you had a great miler to anchor your DMR but he was born without either hand? Lawsuit under the Americans with Disabilities Act?
Rule 7, Section 8e
The same rules and penalties with reference to flagrant infractions or illegal assistance that apply to other track events also shall apply to relay racing. In addition, the referee, after consulting with the appropriate officials, shall disqualify a relay team when:
e. While running, a team member transports the baton in a manner other than
in the hand;

Hell yeah that girl clearly swung back and knocked it out of the Duke girls hand y’all must have never run track before if you can’t see that.
