Master's Runner: Surgery on Foot, what can I do?

I'm in my 40s and need to get a cyst removed on the ball of my foot, right under my sesamoid. The surgeon told me I need to not put any weight on the site, nor can I get it wet. This rules out pool running, ellipitical, even upright biking. When I asked about using a recumbent bike, he winced and said not a good idea, as it might cause unnecessary scarring.

So, folks: does anyone have any idea what I can do. Yes, upper body weights. Maybe some BW exercises as long as I have the boot on.

But is there anything else I can do, or am I SOL for the next 3-4 weeks?

FWIW, not training for anything, just keeping some lowkey general fitness.

Follow the doc’s advice and avoid lower body exercise for a few weeks. Learn to enjoy such breaks and immerse yourself in other rewarding activities. Fitness will quickly come back.

You can do pool workouts if you double-bag your affected foot and seal above the ankle with the right tape. Ask your local physical therapy clinic - they should be able to help.

Assuming...you have 1-3 cm incision in the ball of you foot only (not the arch or heel), i tell my patients to use stationary bike with heel on pedal. You have to lower seat a bit. And use common sense, like not having a shoe that is rubbing on your incsion. It can be done, my surgery patients that need to keep doing cardiac rehab do this. The rowing suggrstion is even better...just get your forefoot off the top and push with heels.

Surgeons dont like to give you an inch, because then people take it too far.

This I would not do. Bottom of foot incisions need full NO weight bearing. Also people eventually get the bag wrong. Water always finds a way. Pool workout not a bad idea once you get stitches out and have no wound at all. But at the end of the day, listen to your doc.

Thanks for this. Should I worry about my sock getting sweaty and messing up the stitching or is that not really a concern?
