Coaches typically enter athletes in multiple events for this meet even if they only plan on running one. After entries are due, there's a scratch period, so they'll look at the competition or what works best with a runner's racing schedule and decide which events to scratch. Then they let additional runners in to fill the schedule.
Girl’s 3200 @ Hamline Elite: 10 girls went sub-11. Jade Rypkema won it in 10:37. I was waiting to see Wayzata’s Grace Mignone break 11, and she did it tonight with a 10:58. Good for her!
Wow! That’s incredible for anyone, let alone a sophomore. Split 4:34-4:26, with a 62 close, so got to think sub 9 is in the cards in the right race.
Yes, and since this is just the start of his sophomore season, he has a lot of meets in the future to lower that time. Big things ahead for this kid. I vividly remember seeing him win the Open Race at Nike Heartland last fall in 15:06, and thinking, “Who? And he’s only a sophomore?!?!”

The thing is in MN, it can be hard to lower. A lot of people don’t run faster than they do at hamline, whether it’s due to lack of competition or conditions. State always seems to be hot! Really hope to see something special though. Already has me excited for XC, maybe he could be a national top 10 contender? MN boys who break 9 have a great track record in XC

Hamline can have nasty conditions, too, but when it’s nice, it’s great for distance with the combining of all of the classes, the engaged crowd, and the cool evening weather. I think some runners perform better in the evening than in the morning, too.

I think the chances for Mechura to be top 10 nationally his senior year are increasing.
Not sure about next year though. But Heartland is getting better on the individuals and team side now

can any Minnesotans fill an NC State fan in on what the general opinion is on Elliott McArthur for those who follow your state's scene pretty closely? Looks like he ran a really quick mile indoors his sophomore year that probably got him on the radar a lot of places and hasn't really improved a ton time wise since then. Have their been injuries or maybe he's just stagnant in general right now? I understand he's not a premier recruit like a Noah Breker, just trying to figure out what kind of runner NC State is getting.

Well McArthur ran a 4:22 1600 as an 8th grader, but he looked like a college student back then. As a 9th grader he was the tallest guy on his varsity xc team. So he probably wasn’t growing much since then. Another reason why he moved down so much in his class rankings could be that he lost his training partners like Skelly, Miller, and Class of 2020 guys, so this is probably the first time he trains on his own, which is hard to adjust to. Minnesota is also very competitive this year, which isn’t surprising because the senior class last year wasn’t as talented as in other years.

got it, thanks for the info. Hopefully he starts the upward trajectory again when he's running with guys faster than him again in college. Hope he can handle the mileage too, NC State throws kids in the deep end starting the summer before xc with high mpw training.
