Regardless of whether the allegations are true, releasing a story like this the day before the biggest race of the team's season is unethical journalism. This is now a major distraction for athletes about to race in a national meet. A hit piece about an NCAA running program should not be treated the same as a political hit piece released before a big event.
I’d love to see a citation to any generally accepted best journalistic practice you’re relying on here. The story was published because *the university* is conducting an investigation. Runners World doesn’t serve at the pleasure of any university or track program. They have no duty whatsoever to time their publication to fit the agenda of the subject entity of the story. I don’t think Runners World generally does good journalism but that is a completely separate issue. There’s nothing wrong with reporting the news. If Wetmore had been accused of something you believe is more sinister would you still be complaining about the timing? If big-time D1 running is all about toughness, as many on the various threads have said, then surely these runners can handle running a race after a story was published.
You are correct, Runners World doesn’t serve at the pleasure of universities; they serve at the pleasure of people who want to spend $500 on gear to run 12 min miles
Maybe waiting a day to release the story so as to not distract innocent college runners the day before the biggest race of their lives. Of course they have a duty to report the news, but they should have put the athletes in mind before releasing this. You acknowledge that this was not a very "sinister" story and they could have easily waited a day to release it to the same effect. The author might have good intentions in mind by questioning the coaching staff, but she also subjected the athletes to unnecessary negative attention the day before their biggest race of the season.

This girl got cut, went to the AD they looked at didn't find anything. Transferred schools wrote two random articles (including one on RW) sent them to the AD or something then got pissed they were like ok don't think this really matters. So her response was to go the complaince department of a school she no longer attends who decided to investigate even though it has nothing to do with NCAA rules?
The only thing that article shows is how much of a legend wetmore is at covering his ass with legal paper work
He isn't going anywhere without a massive payout from a lawsuit

Except by releasing it right before the championship, when the niche sport is getting the most coverage it will probably get, it amplifies a story. This is exactly the kind of story that has to be amplified.
Nothing new...read "Running with the Buffalos," Marks quoted saying “they should look like skeletons with a condom pulled over them."
I guess it makes me soft but I was always really grossed out by stuff like this. And he pinched an 18 year olds waist, scolded him on being too fat and said that gouchers waist was like paper when you pinched it. Gross middle aged dude. sorry is it being “soft” or having self respect?
I thought so too when I read it 15 years ago. Yes being light is good in this sport but Wetmore you’re offering nothing more than “starve yourself”.
The easiest way to tell this is a hit piece is RWs attempt at gotcha journalism when they try to fact check Wetmore's claim that they were getting tested twice a semester by saying it was 4/5 times a year.
I didn’t acknowledge anything. My point was that *you* didn’t seem to troubled by the allegations.
ok
*********You********* can be both troubled with the allegations but at the same time have the opinion that the editor released the story at a time unfair to the athletes.
Weight matters but only to the point it becomes unhealthy. Having calorie deficits while endurance training is not healthy long term and health is more important than speed.
If the program is still run like RWTB days they deserve to be in trouble.
Weight matters more in distance running than height does in basketball.
Imagine if basketball player could control their height. :)
