I dont know if hes staying or not, Im not in TN anymore. I think he moved there bc of his wifes job but not totally sure, if so then maybe hes staying in TN as a rep of some sort. Asics picked up Spivey after Nike dropped him when he didnt make the Olympic team in 1988 (after being injured), he made 2 more teams so Asics really helped pick him up when he was down. Hes totally devoted to Asics. You cant get a much better salesman than that.

It's no big loss to the women's program and if you're going to argue otherwise please consider how they've finished in the SEC since he's been there.

Yeah but the academic standards at Vandy are twice what they are in Knoxville--hell, if you can tell them how many times you did your sister you can matricualte at Tennessee.

As I said, it was from an email from Walt Murphy. I'd say that is credible enough. I also wanted say that I didn't find a newspaper article to back up Walt's email.

Are Vanderbilt's academic standards higher than Wake Forest's? Or Duke's? There is no excuse for Vanderbilt not to be more competitive than it's been.

Spivey has not done the job he set out to do.

Just saw him speak in Atlantic City, after I fixed my hair up pretty, he was awesome, Vandy'll miss him.

I know he's had a very successfull atletic career but has he ever had any coaching success. I'm not a follower of the Vandy women's team so I may be very innacurate but I don't recall them ever being very good. And I don't consider the "academic reputation" enough of a justification for distance failure. Maybe someone in the know can answer the following questions. Is the women's program well funded? Have they had any decent performances since Spivey started coaching there? If the answers are no and no then the guy may indeed know his stuff but its hard to believe the team would miss him.

If we're going to throw academic standards into the mix here, let's be fair -- according to the (admittedly inaccurate) US News rankings, Vandy is ranked 18th academically among "National Universities". Princeton, Duke, Stanford, Yale, Columbia, Dartmouth, Notre Dame, Brown, UPenn, and Cornell all are ranked higher in academics and all arguably have better xc/mid-d/distance programs than Vandy.

Womens team has had moderate success. Best distance individual performance would be Erica Schneble (sp?) who went 16:09 in '04 and made AA outdoors. Consistently top half of SEC in cross, as high as 4th maybe but always between 4th-6th. Never have had all top 5 healthy, seem to be a bit more injuries than most teams.

Also, why do womens teams fare so much better at top academic schools? The ivy women always field teams and individuals that are a force nationally while the men have maybe one team get in the meet. Same with a school like Duke.
