Their long-time coach recently quit. This is their first year without her. Probably not unrelated.
They seem to be doing really well this year though. They beat Riverton for 4th at Timpanogos. And they had 2 juniors (Tripp / Fuller) who were JV last year but this year they became top 3 on the team. Riverton had no one missing, but maybe Ghiz, who is usually their #1, had an off day?
One issue that those schools at Utah face is that those high schools don’t have 9th graders that physically go there. So it’s not as easy to get them out for the team.
All of those schools have like ~ 2500+ kids at them without 9th graders there.....not exactly at a disadvantage.
Currently, 2,784 students are enrolled at Herriman High School and we anticipate the enrollment to increase rapidly for many years to come.
American Fork Enrollment 10-12 in 2020 was ~2300
Skyridge - ~2300
Riverton - ~2300
Give any decent coach that sort of pool of athletes with altitude and a good Mormon work ethic and you can churn out sub 16 boys in your sleep.
People like you said the same thing when he was at GO, but I'm watching GO slowly disentegrate down here in the southern section. They are a shell of what they used to be when Soles was there. Now he takes over at a school nobody has ever heard of (at least I hadn't) and turns them into the top ranked team in the country in less than two seasons of being there and you think it is because he has a good population at the school? That literarlly might be one of the dumbest things I've ever read on here! If you don't like him that is fine with me I was never friends with him. But there is a difference between having a big school and building the best team in the country and you know it.
“First thing for me was: Hey coach, I gotta go to work. And then I was like: What are you talking about? We don’t go to work. This [cross country] is the work.”
Top-ranked Herriman out of Utah scored 59 points with five runners finishing in the top 20 to take home the boys elite team title at the Bob Firman Invitational at Eagle Island State Park in Boise, Idaho on Sept. 23.

A driver was already going too fast when he saw Herriman High School's cross Country team. Fortunately, the coach saw him coming. Alex Cabrero reports. Story...
Brianna was injured throughout HS. She didn't run enough mileage to burnout and was impacted by the pandemic during her last two years of HS which also limited her training. Coach Soles left during her senior year too. In this case, the pandemic was a blessing in disguise for her long-term development in my opinion.
