Great Britain's Jake Wightman came from behind to pass heavy 1500m favorite and defending Olympic champion Jakob Ingebrigtsen on the final lap, holding on fo...
They wanted a link of Wightman's dad who was calling the race on the loudspeaker. I also want to see that video/hear that commentary but can't find it online.
No idea how Wightman was able to get the inside there. If Ingebrigtsen moves forward half an inch there he holds Wightman in the outside of lane 1 for the entire turn and might have won
Watch Wightman carefully in that last 400m. He power moved at 300m, and came abreast of Jakob, then stayed alongside for a bit, regrouped, then BAM, power moved again going into the turn to jump JI.
Katharine Merry op Twitter: "Jake Wightman has become the World 1500m champion. Geoff calling his son becoming a World Champion is priceless. Helene, part of our team, filmed Dad. I sat with Mum Susan..then could not wait to give my mate a hug. Beyond proud. ❤️@JakeSWightman @WightmanGeoff @SusanWightman6 https://t.co/8I8IT6ntwb" / Twitter
Just sharing this from the Team GB camp in Eugene because it's wholesome content. We don't win a lot of gold medals - or many medals at all - like some countries so this really matters. We've got the sprinters, the field athletes, and the distance runners all in this, it's a genuine team. Really nice to see
Got to the front group without too much difficulty, saved the energy until the last lap where he boldly challenged Jakob and and cut him off before the final turn.
Also he improved his SB with almost 3.5 seconds and his PB with 0.24 seconds. Considering his former PB was set in Monaco in a perfect trial where he was paced from start to finish makes his new PB even more impressive.
His rounds were also perfect prudently saving his energy for the final (opposite his big mouth fellow Scot).
