As I thought over this fascinating race, I wondered whether Wightman's move on the last lap that culminated with his brilliant pass and absolutely perfectly timed cut in on the final turn was instinctive or envisioned in advance. What I thought made this so interesting was that the final move in on Jakob did seem to be a key to JW's victory...it just slightly raised the bar mentally and physically for what Jakob would have needed to fight back, and the pace was fast enough that it may have just been what raised a doubt in JI's mind. But JW had to make several moves in the last lap to be in position for this purposeful push into the turn, and he did each of these things with such precision that it made me wonder if it was a scenario he had envisioned. As great a runner as JI is, he is still somewhat predictable...which doesn't matter much when he's just head and shoulders better. But in this case Wightman was fit enough and chose exactly the right mode of attack. Execution couldn't have been better. I suspect Jakob knew he had not only been beaten but outsmarted, and there was respect for Wightman in his response.
