Jerry Schumacher is a bad fit in many ways to be the head coach of a college team.
A. He doesn't like dealing with the media.
B. He is used to managing a small team, not a big team.
C. He is used to dealing with mature adults, not incoming teenage freshman.
D. He is used to having his runners peak for just a few races a year, not having to run 15 or 20 races per year like college kids have to do.
E. He often sets up time trial races for his pros which will be much more difficult to do for his college runners.
F. He specializes in the 5k/10k which is only a small part of a college team.
G.. He doesn't really have to recruit for Bowerman. Plenty of top 5k and 10k runners want to go there because there are very few other great 5k/10k pro groups in the US. Recruiting high school kids will be more difficult and more time consuming.
H. Running a college team and a pro team simultaneously won't work out well.
I. On the other hand, if he quits Bowerman and only coaches the college team, he'll regret it and he'll eventually want to go back to coaching pros.
J. Oregon is getting rid of a fat shamer and replacing him with a guy who supports (and apparently still coaches) a convicted drug user. That doesn't seem like an improvement.
No way this ends well. I don't know if he'll get fired or quit, but either way he'll be gone in just a few years.
Yes, I know he was a college coach many years ago, but that was then and this is now. He won't be able to make the adjustmemt back to college coaching.
